Called in for a coffee on the way to work but it was scalding hot and was not good. But from the other reviews I'll have to give these guys a second try..
What a great coffee nook in the hub of Brisbane CBD.
Great coffee, friendly and quick service. Katina and Kim are special. I would grab them both in a heartbeat if I owned a similar business. I walk past a dozen similar places on the way to the Mill each day that are nowhere as good. Keep up the tremendous work guys!
Right in the foyer of WHK Horwath Center, this espresso bar lies. Immediately from the look and feel of it, there is a better lighting, a better feel to it, and more of an open attitude for clientele. Anyways, this is a good place for coffee and cake, perhaps even a fresher meal. Chalk it up to the expanding list of under-rated gems in the city. At the very base, it is one really long bar serving a number of different items. For any of the people who do work in the building, they must be constant regulars here. How it is set up is well-done, with plenty of space both ways from the counter for clients to look at, with the cashier being closer to the exit, and the coffee machine being right at the cuff of the door - might do a lot more business than one would think. All of the whiz-bang gadgets are behind the counter in full-view, and the use of space is pretty efficient. It is both bigger than you think, or more economical in space than you think - either way, none of it feels crowded or off to the side. Just off the cuff, after a contract for work ended the week beforehand I decided to drop in at random and see how people were going (and.... other reasons). Searching around for a new coffee place to get some sweets, this was one on the way there so I took a sharp turn into the foyer when I went past it. Right on the other side of the hall are a few tables, and there are a few more al fresco, right adjacent to a wall of bush. A bit odd, but the greenery is a good look and makes it seem more relaxing. I know the service in a coffee place is meant to be as quick as possible, and it is even quicker if you are further ahead in line. Still though, this surprised me as just about to sort and put the change back into my wallet when the coffee was already to go. Now that is impressive, really quick and efficient. The range of items includes numerous drinks: fresh fruit juices and smoothies, plus the usual coffee and tea beverages along with all the usual suspects. Then there is all the food, which ranges from fresh fruit, to a major range of freshly baked sweets, to salad items and sandwiches. So the coffee that I got was the usual doppio. If it has not been talked about yet, this sort of language is a bit of a wild card with places that do coffee. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. This place had the former; hey, they did not look at me confused ordering that term - that is a good enough first impression. Not that the latter bothers me in any way. The coffee that they use comes from La'Vazza, which is one of the mid-carders to me. It is not too bad in the hands of someone with plenty of talent, but it is not one the beans that I immediately jump to attention hearing. Regardless, this coffee that I got was slightly sweet in flavour, with a bit of a fruity note underneath the extracted shot. It came with a small wafer biscuit, good little bite on the side. Getting a couple of sweets with the coffee (it honestly was for the office), the ones that looked the best at the time were a chocolate-macadamia slice and a blueberry brownie. Sometimes there is one better choice than the other by a fair margin, whatever margin that existed this time would have been a thin one. First the chocolate macadamia slice, this was pretty good; it is one of those tasty snacks that is a sweet for those who don't particularly go for sweet tastes. The base was firm, and a crispy biscuit while the main layer was soft, slightly gooey and the macadamia definitely had the dominant flavour, with hints of chocolate going with it. The brownie resembled more of a cake than most other kinds of brownies that I remember having. It was moist, delicious, did not skimp on the flavour of chocolate in any way (and enough to not make those adverse to chocolate feel too queasy). Slight hints of blueberry are abound. With the work colleagues, these seemed to be disappearing fast. The Mill on Edward is a fair deal better than most of the coffee bars that exist in the foyer of big buildings. Usually what they do is to just exist as an avenue for the workers above needing a caffeine break, and often loses out for outsiders. Those looking around for another new coffee place might want to consider coming here. It is good quality, very quick and efficient in delivery of service. Maybe going at an off-peak hour didn't give the full story, since I was certainly the only one there at the time (or I think, it wasn't buzzing anyways). However, with how it is ergonomically designed to be seen from the sidewalk with bypassing pedestrians, this place is deservedly banking on some good luck - and good luck to them, since they have earned it in my book.
