Frequented by locals, bargain Malbec and the juciest steak I have ever had, reasonable prices, friendly staff, charming old style interior in an old building, charming.
Montserrat is "the" Spanish district in BA, with its wide Avenida de Mayo resembling La Gran Vía in Madrid, and its many spacious, old-style Spanish restaurants. El Globo is one of them, standing and serving since the 19th century in the same traditional square. If you are used to posh places with new-concept food and bilingual, internationally trained staff, you will probably complain or feel unmet expectations: this is not "nanomolecular food" nor "raw vegan fusion", but the Time Tunnel back to the 50s.In my opinion, this place delivers and brings you back to how restaurants were in BA 40 or 50 years ago: old-school experienced waiters (old themselves) with curt, non-smart ways; wooden doors, vitraux and boisserie; linen tablecloths and napkins, and steaming Spanish cocidos and pucheros to relish with friends or family. You can find a powerful Noon-Only Special for 170 pesos, and an even finer Special at noon and evenings for 220 pesos with assorted entrees, several main courses to choose from and varied desserts. We have tried it at different times and found it very convenient, recommending the Callos a la Madrileña and the Rice with Seafood. You will leave the place quite stuffed and thinking of siesta! The 2-tray Puchero is impressive, with steaming vegetables, meat cuts and chorizos. If you have Spanish ancestors, the experience will bring you back to your granny's childhood meals, and if you don't, well, you will truly enjoy yourself! I found the wines are not cheap, but as prices are going up lately with the new government, it is hard to find a stable benchmark these days. They take credit cards and offer parking vouchers for those who drive to the restaurant. In short, if you are lucky with the waiter and align your expectations to the kind of place it is, you will adore it and have a memorable dinner in "Spanish BA".
Relaxed old worlde restaurant serving unpretentious wholesome food. Varied menu. Large portions. Excellent value
Just back from the restaurant... I had some decent shrimps with garlic, but then instead of grilled tuna they served me a stinking swordfish...everything but fresh. I hope I will survive.
