Floreria Atlantico - Buenos Aires

There has been a hipster resurgence of speakeasies for a while now, they come in all kinds. But Florería Atlántico is a diamond in the rough of all the speakeasies. The entrance is not just cute, but outright beautiful. The street level is a flower/wine store. And the flower arrangements are just stunning. To get to the bar level (in the basement) there is no need for a secret codeword, you just walk in and either you have a reservation or you show up either really early (before 11pm) or late (after 1am during week) and should be able to get a table. We arrived at 12.30 after dinner and there was the option between a table along the wall of the really long rube like basement room, but opted to sit at the bar (which was the right decision.) The drink menu is an ode to the various immigrant groups listing cocktails that are influenced by the countries of this immigrants anything from Italian to Bolivian to Mexican. It is a joy to drink yourself through the menu, while you watch the expert bar staff as well as BsAs’s night owls. We didn’t eat here so I can’t judge the food but the cocktail can easily hold up with NY bars. And if you are looking for a cocktail this is the place to go. The staff is great and the location is really cool, and the drinks are outstanding.

It is through the refrigerator door and down the steps that you find a bar several times larger than the flower shop above.The decor is understated, but the drinks are spot on and creative. The owner has fabricated his own gin and his own tonic to make one of the finest g&t's south of the equator. I had the Cacharita Death Train - the first drink I have seen or drank (and I've had my share) with actual ash in the ice. Why not buy some flowers and have a drink at the same time?
