We like the packaging there, good tasting and convenient. it is a bit expensive if you order the other items.
Occasionally, I'll be asked how I was dealing with writing a food blog. My answer is usually the same... I'm getting old. But more on the point, I want to try different places when I eat, and sometimes I can't remember if or not... I have eaten somewhere before and whether the food was good (because I get old). So it is slightly ironic that I wound up on Abdul's BBQ in Crystal Mall. I say it's ironic because I've been here in 2012 (5 years ago) and wrote a blog post about that almost repeated my recent experience to a T. In my previous review I wasn't so enthusiastic about Abduls for certain reasons. If I had read my audition, I would probably have been somewhere else... Oh, good, live and learn. I'm going to the point of this review... Abduls BBQ is located outside the Crystal Mall (via Kingsway). Prices are somewhat expensive for this type of establishment. In 2012 the prices were about $12 and I thought it would be expensive. Just before 2018 and the items I ordered were about $15 (compared to, somehow expensive, compared to other places that serve Fast Food Shawarma . Although they have 3 vertical spikes with rotating meat, they do not shave the meat from the spikes when you order it. Instead, the meat has already been cut off and placed in separate metal containers (assuming it is because in Canada you need to apply a second cooking method after shaving the meat from the spits. The meat is also comminuted in very small pieces (which I do not like). One thing I will say for them is that the posters we have ordered (the chicken alwarma and the upper round beef alwarma were extremely heavy. There is a fairly healthy portion of shredded meat and rice here, which should also fill the hungry dunes. The problem I have with Abduls is her flesh so dry and bland. While the Tabbouleh and Hummus are pretty good, only these dry plates could not really save. When you look into the Pita bread that comes with your meal, they melt on some sauce that is beautiful (and a bit chaotic). I personally had much better Shawarma. I hope the next time I'm in the mood to try Abduls, I'll read my blog post and go around somewhere else.
I ate there a few times when I was in Burnaby. There was a lot of food that Pita with the sauce was great, but I definitely had better Shawarma elsewhere.
My husband and I visited Abdul’s for lunch on a recent trip. The place was busy with regulars which is always a good sign so we didn’t mind the wait. We both like our food decently spicy so when my husband was asked “mild, medium...or hot?” he went with hot. It was way too spicy for me. I’m not knocking the quality of the food at all, our chicken shawarma was fresh and tasty, but I would definitely go mild or medium unless you have a stomach of iron. Good place for a tasty lunch.
