Courtepaille - Calais

After cycling for two weeks in France, I was in Calais for my last night. Hotel gave me a discount voucher for this restaurant, so cycles over with great expectations.Placed an order with the waitress, in French, she was determined as anything not to speak any English at all, fair enough, if she was visiting dover we wouldn't entertain French, but, Calais is a main hub for English holidaymakers, more than Dover being a gateway for the French coming to sunny England.Part of the order was 'unlimited vegetables or sides' ok went for the vegies.The same waitress returned with my extra salad and dropped the plate on the floor at my feet, spluttering my shoes, socks and shorts with mayonnaise. Yup, there was a barrage of apologies, but not once handed a napkin for me to clean up. OK. Salad came again, successfully! Tick!Main dish came, not with unlimited vegies, but sides. Cross!I asked the same waitress for a beer, never came. Cross!Called another male waiter, guy with a silly Mohican pointed rat-tail haircut or something. He acknowledged me, but didn't come back. Cross!I got his attention again later and in English asked for a beer, again, Je ne comprend pas, and walked off. Cross!Finally the original waitress came back about 10 minutes later to explain they are changing the taps on the beer line. OK, communicating now. TickI did tell her I had been waiting for about 15-minutes now and I had pretty much finished my plate. Beer turned up, finally.Desert was ordered and again, same waitress pretty much slapped the plate down as if it was prison food. Cross.Talked with the manager after this has all concluded, in reality, he could give a hoot.Good food, and with a discount it was bearable, but the whole experience was enough to give indigestion. First time ever to put something up about a restaurant, it was that bad, would never go back.

Good food,large helpings good value.we will look for this chain in future. The staff were excellent. Open all day on a Sunday!

Grill Courtepaille is very nice place, staff is friendly and polite, food is excellent, service is fast, price to value ratio is good (45EUR for 3 good quality meals).

My Friend and I went here twice in September 2014. Service was very good staff very attentive. Food was good although no Porc on both nights.Steaks were cooked to perfection. Service was good and very efficient

We've eaten in several Courtepaille restaurants during several years visiting France. We've never expected fine dining but have always found that the food is ok and the staff friendly. Sadly, cannot say this about the Calais version.We arrived on a Sunday evening, had a greeting that was at best lukewarm. Although not busy, it took a long time for our order to be taken and a further lengthy wait for the food, not something that would be a problem if the result was an excellent meal. Normally one of the first things that happens is for someone to ask if you want a drink - this did not occur and only when at last someone took the order did we get a drink.When the food did arrive, in one case it was not what was ordered. The waitress checked and confirmed that what had been ordered and what had been served were not the same thing. You'd expect some form of apology and removal of the incorrect meal. In this case, wrong. Instead it appeared that she was expecting us to accept a meal we hadn't ordered. We declined and very quickly, the correct meal was provided.Sadly the quality of one of the meals did not match our modest expectations.We decided on a dessert, which was rather thrust at us if we were imposing on the staff for being customers (in fairness, not all the staff seemed to have this attitude and perhaps we were just unlucky).McDonalds was close to where we were staying - with hindsight, we should have gone there.
