Sushi Bistro Anzu - Calgary

The food at this restaurant ranges from average to excellent, though not every dish offers good value for the price. I went with two friends and we sampled several items. The highlight was the sablefish, which had a wonderful miso flavor and was cooked to perfection! The katsu curry and tonkotsu ramen were tasty, but I personally prefer more robust flavors elsewhere. The toro sashimi and special scallop sushi were enjoyable, but I feel I could have found the same quality for a lower price at another place. The amaebi (shrimp) sashimi was fresh and delightful! However, both the soft shell crab and the agedashi tofu were rather forgettable. For dessert, I tried the sesame pudding, which was a bit too sweet for my taste due to the added maple syrup; I would have liked it better plain. Nevertheless, the pudding itself was quite nice! The total bill came to $40 per person, not including drinks, which is fairly pricey. While I would return for the sablefish and the pudding, I wouldn’t visit often due to the high cost.

I had an amazing dining experience at this restaurant. The chirashi ($24) was a delightful mix of fish, beautifully presented, with rice that was seasoned to perfection. My husband ordered the Katsu curry don ($15), which was served in a generous portion; the curry was rich and tasted exactly as a traditional Japanese curry should. The staff were very friendly, and our food arrived promptly. I should mention that there was only one server managing a mostly full restaurant, yet she handled everything exceptionally well. No one’s water glasses were ever empty, and she was very attentive to each table. We will definitely return!

The food was absolutely delicious, the staff was wonderfully friendly, and the restaurant itself was clean and inviting. We stopped by for lunch and found an incredible lunch special that featured sashimi, udon soup, salad, and the chef's special—all for just $14. I decided to try the 'hell ramen', and it was amazing; the broth had the perfect level of spice! We also shared the spicy tuna and eel rolls, both of which were exceptional. We’re definitely planning to return!

I really adore this restaurant! I'm a huge fan of the wide variety of dishes they offer. The service is outstanding, and the food is incredibly delicious. We'll definitely be coming back for more!

Overall rating: 5/5 The Japanese cuisine here is simply outstanding! I highly recommend trying the chef's specials. I particularly loved the three-shellfish sashimi set. The ramen broth that came with the red shrimp was incredibly flavorful and full of umami. Everything we ordered was of exceptional quality and taste. Our server was friendly and made us feel very welcome.
