Feedback gevenPlease note, this review is for Mee 's Sushi City, on Marcus Clarke Street I don 't want to unfairly tar the other branches with a similar brush. I stopped in here to grab lunch for my colleague, having already purchased my own lunch at Subway, 50m away. While standing in the queue, I witnessed the lady in front of me get berated by the man serving her, simply for asking if she could order something that was still being prepared in the kitchen (she said she was happy to wait the stated three minutes for it, but he carried on as if she had asked for the keys to the kingdom and made a big deal of making her 'STAND ASIDE AND WAIT BECAUSE IT 'S STILL BEING MADE AND IS THREE MINUTES AWAY ' . My turn came and I ordered, however when I got to the counter, the same man tried to charge me for the half full bottle of water I was holding in my hand (this in itself didn 't concern me, although it would have been nice if he had civilly asked me before just automatically adding it to the total . When I told him I had actually purchased the water from Subway, he started mocking me, saying 'ohhhh, that 's intereresting, you got it from Subway, that 's really weird, yeah, Subway, riiggghhht ' basically accusing me of shoplifting. Unfortunately I didn 't have a receipt from Subway, but hopefully he gets an opportunity to check out the CCTV footage, which will prove I was nowhere near the drink fridge at Mee 's Sushi at any time! It 's a shame, because I have heard that the food from this place is generally excellent, however I will never again step foot inside an establishment that treats its customers in such a rude, consescending manner.
I haven't been to the other locations around Canberra, but this one has been here for a while and is located at Brindabella Park near the Airport. I came here because I wanted to know if it was authentic. Especially a few days before there was a very large queue of people lined up including out the door. So I decided to find out for myself and the staff is a mixture of Asian and Australian. Unfortunately, the authenticity is not present. I am uncertain as to what nationality the Asian staff are, but the food preparation is sub-standard. Japanese chefs and Japanese owned restaurants are very very pedantic... everything that they do including their rituals are perfect beyond belief. Ordering a Sushi Combo and a Prawn Combo and experiencing for the first time.... no sorry absolutely not! Why? 1. The rice with the sushi on top falls apart when you pick it up by hand or with chopsticks. Real Japanese chefs will never let that happen. 2. The taste, is basic, as though they quickly just shoved ingredients together and thrown it into a plastic transparent box. Real Japanese use culinary skills to make the person who is eating their offerings special, refined and... lots of metaphors can thrown around authenticity. None of that exists here. 3. The price, expensive, considering where they are located. What annoys me greatly is the loss of authenticity. I paid good money for authentic Japanese. I'm sorry, in accordance to the Trade Practices Act or relative legislation; I did not get what I paid for. Its like getting Japanese people to cook Chinese food or something that just does not make sense. Instead, it is a con, Asian individuals who are not Japanese nor Korean... have prepared these offerings. Who have not been trained properly in the culinary arts; and instead most likely gone to Youtube to obtain their knowledge.
Sushi is warm, surely that cannot be sanitary? It is by far the most bland sushi I’ve ever had and I’ve eaten a lot! It’s like plain rice has been used rather than sushi rice which means a) there is no flavour and b) sushi falls apart instantly. Will not be going again. (Brindabella store, can’t comment on the others)
Called 40 minutes before they closed to ask if it was okay to pre-order a meal, staff told me it’s perfectly fine. Placed the order and came to pick it up after 20 minutes only to be told “no it’s too late and we’re not making anymore”. No apologies for wasting my time. Doesn’t make any sense. It was a yes or no question. Not happy at all.
