We ordered both types of cheeseburgers on the menu. They offer Swiss cheese but not Cheddar, which was a bit disappointing since we're from Wisconsin and cheese is important to us. I usually order steak medium rare and burgers medium, but this burger came out rare. I ended up eating around the edges since it was quite a big burger for just $5.00. It had a unique flavor that reminded me of steak; I can't help but wonder if they cook their steaks on the same grill. The flavor was good and the burger was definitely not dry! On a positive note, the bartender was fantastic and kept everything running smoothly. When I mentioned my rare burger, he said he often hears that complaint, so it seems this isn’t an isolated incident.
I tried the fried chicken, which is supposedly a specialty in Missouri, but I was disappointed to find it hard, dry, and lacking flavor. It made me wish the locals could come to J and J's to learn how to make tender, moist, and well-seasoned chicken that actually tastes good. I thought it would be impossible to mess up the ham, but I was surprised to find that the ham here was well-prepared and flavorful. There were also breakfast items available. The thick-cut bacon was cooked perfectly, not overly crispy, suggesting they use high-quality bacon, unlike many other places. I wasn’t particularly fond of the sausages, but they were cooked well; I suppose I'm just picky about sausages. The buffet also featured potatoes and gravy, cookies, and sausage on skewers—although I might be forgetting some items. For dessert, there were soft serve options, at least two different cakes, and cinnamon rolls. The rolls were light, and the icing was excellent—I'm definitely a fan of cinnamon rolls! Additionally, they offered both canned and fountain soda, all for just $10. If you’re nearby, I recommend stopping by. If you're a bit farther away, it's worth the drive!
This is a cozy little bar located in a classic Midwestern small town. I had a nice conversation with Dave while sipping on some Old Style beers. Dave is quite an interesting person with a wealth of stories to share. I really enjoyed my time here.
