Dragon Pearl Restaurant - Charlestown

The restaurant in Charlestown has closed and changed ownership. I used to love it, but not anymore since it has been renovated and sold. Now, it is a fantastic Chinese and Thai takeaway called Hon Won Chinese Thai Takeaway located at 187 Pacific Hwy.

Like Peter L, I have dined at numerous Chinese restaurants in Australia and other countries. Unfortunately, this establishment is just another one serving Westernized Chinese dishes. We ordered 4 main dishes for 3 people. One dish was described as braised duck with crab meat and mushrooms, but the crab meat turned out to be seafood extender and lacked flavor. The other dishes - Peking Scallops (with an unusual sauce), satay king prawns, and pork ribs in plum sauce - were all a bit underwhelming. The service provided by the waitress was attentive and prompt, and the decor, while minimal, was clean and tidy. The meals were served quickly, but as a connoisseur of authentic Chinese cuisine, I may have been a bit spoiled. I aim to be fair in my assessment.

Our party of 6 arrived just before closing time, but we were made very welcome by the young waitress. Nothing was a problem. The food was fresh and yummy, with great flavour. The owner of the restaurant came out to offer more chinese tea, as it was so late by this stage that the young waitress had to leave as she had school the next day. To top it all off, the bill was very reasonable! We will definitely be eating there next time we are staying in the area.

I have been going to Dragon Pearl for almost 30 years, and out of all the Chinese restaurants I have tried in Australia, I consider Dragon Pearl to be the best. The food is excellent, with my favorite dish being the honey chicken. I am impressed by the quick service, the professionalism of the staff and owners. The food is fantastic in every way. Thank you, Dragon Pearl, for always delighting my taste buds with your culinary delights.
