Mama's Carribean Grill - Charlotte

Since it was a Tuesday evening, it was quite quiet; it was just the two of us dining in, although there were many take-out orders. I got off work at 7:30 PM, so I appreciated their warm hospitality. Our meals were served hot, and the portion sizes were generous. I highly recommend trying Mama's punch — it was amazing! As someone who doesn't drink alcohol, I was delighted to enjoy a delicious fruit punch made with fruits I'd never tasted before. The atmosphere was delightful, and we definitely plan to return. I had the curry shrimp, while my partner enjoyed the goat dish.

I usually order the curry shrimp from here every week, but this time was a disaster. It seemed like the cook must have been having a bad day. They usually don’t leave the tails on the shrimp, but this time was different—instead, someone decided to drown the dish in an excessive amount of curry, making it almost inedible. The vegetables were overcooked and dry, and the macaroni was terrible; even my dog wouldn’t touch it. To top it all off, I couldn’t get in touch with anyone by phone to address my concerns. What a disappointment!

As a Jamaican American, I have to say that I was really disappointed with the food. I ordered curry goat, and while the portion size was generous, the flavor was nothing like any curry goat I've ever had. It was tough and lacked seasoning, which made it unappetizing. The sauce was unappealing, and the plantains looked old. The sorrel drink was also quite unpleasant. In the end, I ended up only eating the white rice and picking at the goat. My friend had recommended this place, but he doesn't seem to understand authentic Jamaican cuisine like many people in North Carolina, who often confuse this food with what’s genuinely good. I definitely won't be returning. Additionally, the server who took our order lacked any personality, almost as if she didn’t want to be there.

I highly recommend you visit and see for yourself. I give them five stars for the food, five stars for the service, and five stars for the atmosphere, making it a total of 15 stars in my book! I was so grateful for my meal; I had prayed before going that I wouldn't spend too much money on food I didn't enjoy.

Incredible!!! I ordered the brown stew snapper, and it was cooked to perfection just as I requested! The spice level was spot on, the vegetables were excellent, and everything was incredibly fresh! Don't just walk—run to this place!
