May’s Malaysian is a humble shop front (because let’s face it, nothing in this food court is fancy) where you can either choose from the hot dishes in the bain-marie or order one of their soups or rice dishes. I’m an absolute sucker whenever I see eggplant sambal so I opted for the 3 dishes + rice for $8, with eggplant sambal, beef black bean and a chicken curry. The stalls on that strip down Victoria are so convenient. May’s set up shop here and it was imperative I take advantage of the $5 Chicken Satay sticks. 4 pieces! How are they able to do this! I like to shop and snack, so this is perfect as you parade yourself down the mall and they’ve saved me the walk to their homeless at Mandarin Centre! The sauce had all the flavors, however didn’t have that thickness in texture we like with our Chicken Satay and more runny - but it worked. As a street snack, it did well!
They had a stall at the Night Noodle Markets so decided to give it a go as intrigued by what the Fried Radish Cakes would taste like. I imagined them to be like ones you see in yum cha which are the square fried vegetable patties however they were served chopped up and served like a noodle stir fry. They were still very tasty with elements of char kway teo. It had beansprouts and crispy onions.
Feeling the need to be slightly healthy and having something wholesome, Hainan Chicken Rice seemed to be the good option tonight. East West ran out of Hainan Chicken Rice and I was on a mission to kill the craving so May's it was. It's not the first time I've had it at Mays so knew what to expect. Usually May's tries to offer more value being in direct competition; there's a few more pieces of chicken and the chicken is served warm compared to East West. The chicken arrived looking slightly overcooked (and it was), the rice was bright yellow lacking the distinct chicken and ginger flavour and the soup was slightly spoiled with a sour note due to the being left out for too long. This usually occurs on a hot day today was mid 30s. The chicken is normally quite good so I excused it on this occasion but there is no excuse for the soup. Unfortunately, work ethic seems to be a consistent theme here. The last time I had the combination noodles, the beef was very tough most likely recycled from the unsold dishes from the bain marie. Now, I don't make such serious accusations unfounded. I can tell recooked beef being many years in the kitchen. This would have worked in the early 90s when people didn't know better but just doesn't cut it in this day and age. Will not be returning for a while.
