If you are staying in CF search out this little restaurant. Simple, superb food. No menu; just a Menu du Jour at The Lady Proprietor served the drinks; took the orders; cooked the food; cleared the table; cleaned the kitchen; and prepared the bill....A one-woman tour de force!
The restaurant offers a fixed-price or course menu with a daily choice of dishes for each course. There is no printed menu or drinks list with prices, which may be a source of confusion. Two of us ate at this restaurant twice,...mainly because it was close to our hotel. The restaurant bills itself as ‘home cooking’, which it is. Not bad, but probably not the best home cooking you’ve ever tasted and possibly not better than your own home cooking. The first time we ate there, we both had some local pâté for starters and a local veal dish for main course. We had only just arrived in Clermont and the food was okay, although nothing to write home about and we paid for our courses and left. When we returned a few days later we had a salad starter with a roast chicken main course, and a courgette salmon lasagne. The chicken drumsticks had obviously been cooked some hours earlier and were very dry and chewy. The courgette, rather than pasta, lasagne was small and wet. The courgette did not work as replacement for pasta as its moisture came out in the bowl and left it swimming in water. It would have been better to roast the courgette before putting it into the lasagne. over, there was only a small amount of salmon in the small bowl. We had also ordered a half litre carafe of white wine with our meal. The drinks price list in the window listed a half litre carafe of wine at so we just assumed this would be the standard price for a carafe of house wine as there was no printed drinks menu. So we did not confirm the price when we ordered. When we went to the till to pay for our courses, initially she processed our credit card payment based on courses each. When we questioned this the owner did correct the payment for courses, but we were a little surprised at her initial error which of course would have overcharged us if we hadn’t noticed. However, the bill for the wine was rather than The owner pointed to a price on the wine fridge and said that is what we had. However, it was not clear that our carafe of wine had been poured from the bottles in the fridge. We should have questioned this further at the time but our French is limited and it was getting awkward questioning the bill further. So we paid what we believed was still an incorrect amount. Needless to say we did not return to the restaurant during our week stay. The confusion over the bill and the mediocre food meant it was not worth another visit. If you do go to this restaurant then I’d recommend you make sure you know how much the drinks you order cost and check the charges for your food. There may even be a printed drinks menu available, but we were not offered one.
