The temperature of the meat was perfect. The seafood soup the best in my life. The restaurant looks very traditional and clean and tidy. The service was poor. They bring us starters and mains at the same time without asking us, actually one main for one of us and later 2 starters. They did not give us the opportunity to have a little taste to the wine first. They did not check back after bring us the mains. They definitely can improve a lot.
In 1990, carrying tools equipment from UK to our ruined house, under restoration, in Malaga Province,we ran out of strength, on the pre motorway road from the coast southwards, stayed in an Hostal in Aguilar de la Frontera, in Cordoba, next to a service station opposite a Disco! Not much sleep! But we ate drank well, particularly a Fino of the region. Next day we were directed to the Bodega (Toro Albala) where we bought wine: we have been back once or twice a year ever since, buying 5 litre boxes of Fino. bottles of PX Dulce, Joven vinegar a superb establishment! Last week our usual lunch stop in Aguilar, El Nido, was closed so we took advice from the Bodega, who recommended La Casona, about 300 metres away. They were right! One of the best meals the 4 of us have eaten in small, off the track towns. Almost empty when we arrived, it was bustling by 14.00, but we were well looked after. It's an old building, with nice features decorated in good taste. Proper table cloths napkins. Good wines great food in ample portions By the time we left the place was nearly full all local or passing Spaniards this is not a restaurant that the itinerant, casual tourist will find . Nor should they! We wish to save it for ourselves!
This is probably the best restaurant in Aguilar De La Frontera. The service is excellent and the food is one of the best experiences I have had. Not only that the portions are generously served but also deliciously tasting. They probably make the best Salmorejo (a cold creamy soup made of bread, tomatoes and olive oil) in Spain. Their wine selections are extremely good too, perhaps a bit pricey for Spanish standard but definitely much cheaper compared to London prices. Try the Legaris Verdejo Rueda 2011 white wine or the Habla Del Silencio 2010 Red. Also try their steak, it's wonderfully succulent and perfectly cooked to your preference.
