We prefer to sit down in this living room and look over the square to the ancient San Giacomo Apostolo church at cafe Barbaro, because the service from the friendly waitress is OK, good coffee, or Crodino and crisps in the afternoon. Time will pass by unnoticed.
Stopped in for drinks and a view of the square. Was given potato chips and cheese puffs to munch on. The view was good, the snacks not so much. Looks like they had good pastries and other food, but did not try them. I can recommend this place for drinks.
I argued in my review that Piazza San Giacomo is a soothing open air living room in Udine. If that is true, Barbaro is the appropriate armchair in this living room. Situated on the corner of the far end, opposite the Chiesa San Giacomo, a large outdoor seating area is provided for with efficient service and a selection of white wine. Salute.
Without the living room ambiance of Piazza San Giacomo, Barbaro would decend to the level of any old Italian bar, but the Piazza makes sitting down at an outside table of Barbaro a soothing and pleasant experience. As it is difficult to mess up an order of cappuccino and cornetto, (and the waitress didn 't, we had a terrific sit down looking at Udine street life, and will definitively return on our next visit to Udine.
Piazza Mateotti is the outdoor living room of Udine. And in a corner, with a nice view on the historic church opposite, Barbaro is situated. Plenty of tables and chairs to choose from. Barbaro is operated by a friendly and attentive waitress. The Crodini are fetched by the waitress in the blink of an eye. Just sit back, relax, enjoy the Crodino, soak up the atmosphere of the historic Piazza and watch the street life of Udine.
