Due to Covid, they were only serving on the porch, but it was a lovely evening. The hosts are so friendly and informative! Other members of the local Historical Society came there to eat and we have amazing conversations. We were able to see the other historical buildings and mural on the site. We hope next time we can see the inside of the house for this is a true labor of love!
After a 20 Mile bike ride on the Flint Hills trail, my husband and I were ready for some serious eats. This place had a menu with a historical nod to the Santa Fe Trail past featuring elk, bison, well known immigrant specialties and home made bread and home cooked veggies. All reasonably priced. Not only was the food satisfying but the place is a real labor of love as the building is a historical treasure. The owner is a wonderful tale teller and keeper of local history and you will leave feeling like you were treated to a good meal by a friendly Santa Fe trail innkeeper...and don't forget the pie.
We stopped here on our way to Albine, Ks. This place is packed with history. We toured the museum while they prepared our meal. The menu is varied and the service is great. We had elk, sweet potatoes and cherry strawberry pie. The place has a corner with children books and toys , It is a great option for the whole family.
I went in just before they were to have a group of 30+ for lunch, so I wasn't able to eat. It's probably best to check if they can serve you before you go. Even though the owners were busy preparing the meal for the group, the gentleman stopped and gave me a quick orientation to the place and its history. I was then able to look around at the pictures and artifacts, including the lower seating area and the upstairs trail period bedroom display. There is also a variety of historic out-buildings scattered around the property.
A history lesson and a great meal! The operator was highly knowledgeable of the area's history, and was more than happy to share many interesting and funny anecdotes with us. Even better, the food was excellent! I got the bison pot roast with succotash and sweet potatoes, and my partner got the Swedish meatballs. Both were incredibly good, and tasted fresh and healthy. The bread was fresh and homemade, and was awesome. I absolutely intend to come back and eat later.
