All pastry products are fantastic and specifically Pan Cremona, a special cake with lot of chocolate inside and outside: to be tried! The location is wonderful because the main square, Piazza del Duomo, is far only 50 meters!
Lanfrachi is a Cremonese institution, one of the best known pastry shops in Italy, a landmark and also a very pleasant place to stop by for a short while, to buy something or to drink a quick coffee. You can 't sit there, it 's a real pastry SHOP, not what is usually called salon de thé . So you come here to buy traditional Cremonese sweets and that intriguing heritage from the Middle Ages, mostarda di Cremona. There is a counter at the back where you can order an espresso but no tables, no seats. The selection of cakes and chocolates is very wide. If you 're not from Italy or from Cremona, you should be amazed by the variety. Don 't expect anything modern, anything Ladurée-style. Every product from Lanfranchi breathes history. The signature cake is called Pan Cremona and it 's a lovely sponge cake covered in chocolat and packed in a beautiful white and gold box. A small box (2-4 portions) costs about 6 EUR. Lanfranchi also makes their own mostarda di Cremona (a middle glass 6 EUR), so if you want an edible souvenir from this town you can buy it there. The interior is well preserved, very bright, the white colour dominates and in the gloomy february afternoon during my visit to Cremona it was like an oasis of light and tranquillity. Tranquillity, because unlike so many places in Italy, Lanfranchi doesn 't force you to listen to any music coming from loudspeakers. The room is calm, if there are few people, and pleasantly filled with natural sounds, if there are more customers. I wish, there would be more places like this! In Cremona, there are three historic pastry shops that don 't use loudspeakers: Lanfranchi, Duomo and Dondeo. I love them for it (and not only for it).
First time visited Cremona and could not resist to the vitrine of Lafranchi Pasticceria. As it was Halloween, I opted for the ossetti , i.e small bones biscuits, which were really exceptional. I asked to buy also a box of marons glacés, but I decided not to, as I should pay 23 euros for a box containing nine chestnuts! However, we enjoyed the ossetti so much, that I 'm thinking of going back to Cremona just to visit the Lafranchi!
Great pasties. come every year here, highly recommended!
