I sometimes come here on Thanksgiving week ... but end up missing my cranberry sauce gravy, that would make it almost like home. Always crowded busy; the owner always seems to be there, often together with his son, supervising and directing a crowded operation that appears to running exactly as it was fifty years ago .... or whenever HE first began working here. Even the furniture and the paint on the walls feels like they're the original, from over a hundred years ago !! Seriously ! This place has been here THAT LONG. Actually, it probably got its last make-over in the fifties or sixties. Only thing that bothers me is that the portions are not that big ... for the five bucks you pay for your sandwich.
I got lots of memorable moments here, they 're so nice, the owner is very polite always asking better service to customers, eating close to you, he 's very humble. My specialty is turkey soup served in a cup (a dish is too much) and a marinated tenderloin, smoked pork leg or smoked turkey tortas filled with guacamole, I like traditional chiles en escabeche prepared in a wooden barrel, Taste is unique. haha. A torta bite with an traditional chili... Uhmmm Try it. It 's cheap really, place is small, sometimes you share your table with a new expecional person. Smell is a little bit strong your clothes got a turkey smell. Doesn 't matter to me. I recommend this Mexican unique place.
Looks are definitely deceiving. Little place with so much to offer. They have Turkey everything. I had the Cuban torta. My husband had the Turkey torta and the garlic soup. He didnt like the soup that much. The tortas were both very good. It's about a 10 min walk from el Zocalo. Also ame out in the Netflix movie Roma.
I had heard about La Casa del Pavo from Lonely Planet. After a busy morning of exploring downtown Mexico City, I searched out the fabled restaurant specializing in turkey sandwiches on Peatonal Motolinia (a pedestrians-only street). The setting is very simple. You might have to share a table with another patron, which I did, enjoying lunch with a very friendly older Mexican gentleman. I arrived hungry and after devouring the turkey club I walked out very satisfied. They don't serve cerveza, but order a couple of refrescos (soft drinks) instead.
Another great little find in the Centro Historico, and they specialize in turkey. Not Turkish food, no. Gobble, gobble turkey. And it's GOOD.
