I initially planned to dine at Basil, a Thai restaurant across the street, since it had better reviews. However, it was closed for renovations until the end of May. So, I decided to check out this place, which was just 0.1 km away and seemed decent. I ordered the tofu pad Thai, as I was in the mood for something a bit saucy and extra spicy, and the serving size was enormous! Honestly, I could have shared it three ways. It also came out super quickly! The best part was that it only cost $11.95, compared to $17.95 at Basil, which was a significant attraction. There was also plenty of crispy tofu, and they kindly inquired if I was okay with it. The taste was 4 stars, but the service, price, and portion size earned it 5 stars in my book!
Large lunch special, got the yellow curry and was surprised by the worth and portion size
This restaurant has terrible service. The waiter charged us two dollars for Thai chili, which felt excessive. Additionally, he seemed to care more about greeting other tables warmly while he just tossed our orders down and walked away. The chicken satay we ordered was overly dry, flat, and thin, and it looked nothing like the picture on the menu. Overall, I felt undervalued as a customer after this experience.
After carefully reviewing the menu, I opted for the Prik Khing Pork Belly, priced at about $15. Our waiter swiftly collected our menus and returned with ice water. The food arrived after a reasonable wait of about 15 minutes. At first glance, the portion size seemed adequate for the price. However, upon closer inspection, I was disappointed to find that most, if not all, of the pork pieces were mostly fat rather than meat. This was quite disheartening, especially given the enticing photos of the dish I had seen on Yelp that showcased large chunks of pork. If the pork belly had been fried, it might have been more acceptable since the fat can enhance the flavor of the dish when cooked well. Unfortunately, for this particular dish, the fatty portions were fried to the point of resembling pork rinds. While the green beans and rice were served in generous portions, the lack of substantial pork made it difficult to justify the $15 price tag. It’s possible that I simply received an unfortunate piece of pork. The taste of the dish is closely related to its quantity, and without a good amount of meat, it’s hard to accurately assess it. From the small bits of actual pork that I tasted, it wasn’t bad overall. The pork had a nice flavor from the chili paste, providing a mild kick without being overly spicy. However, it was somewhat dry, which I assumed was intentional. The fat was notably salty, leaving me reaching for water and rice to balance the flavor. In small amounts, the salty essence could have complemented the other ingredients, but it ended up overpowering the dish, leaving me longing for more actual pork. The green beans were well stir-fried and seasoned generously with salt. I gave Brown Rice three stars primarily due to the inadequate amount of pork in the dish. Despite the ample quantity of other ingredients, the lack of pork made me question the value of my meal several times during my visit. While the food experience wasn't ideal, I have to commend the service, which was excellent. Several waitstaff checked in frequently to ensure everything was satisfactory. I’ll give Brown Rice the benefit of the doubt, attributing my experience to a less-than-ideal piece of pork. I’m likely to return to try other menu items. Overall, it wasn’t a bad experience at Brown Rice!
