I must add that this is the best tasting frozen margarita that I found in thickinson! chips, salsa and queso were all very good. ordered a chile relleno ala carte with queenso instead of red sauce. I am not a big fan of crispy rellenos (I prefer the soft,) but this was very tasty and was probably one of the best crispy I have eaten. came on a bed rice with a small mais in it, that was a perfect compliment. only restaurant I visited twice in my three weeks in dickinson.
The warm chips and Salsa definitely set the mood. Oh let's not forget the Mexican beer. Food was delicious. Its definitely a go to restaurant for us. Try the p5 on the menu.
Excellent experience! they were packed and still ensured that my family from 6 to the best of their ability, even a manager or owner step in to help! the food was delicious!
Place is very decent. Humble surroundings. They have very nice decor inside, making it look like a little town place and -you guessed it a few sombreros on the walls... Service was quick albeit the waiter was a little dry and short. Glad to say he got all our orders right with no issues and was checking on us every now and then. Food portions are a bit on the small side, but the prices for these parts are very cheap on most menu items. They have your typical tortillas chips and salsa. Salsa is a bit tangy but spicy as well and a nice complement to the chips. Also nice touch to have them come in a little jar to pour in the containers. I had a fajita platter combo with chicken and steak and like I said, portion on the meat was a little on the small side. Enough to fix about 3 to maybe 4 fajita wraps on small tortillas. The Guacamole was a miss, but their Spanish rice is legit good. All in all, it 's a nice place to have your texmex fix and it 's above your average Mexican restaurant . Definitely give them a try.
El Sombrero, commonly and affectionately called “El Som” or “The Som” by locals, is one of the most popular restaurants in Dickinson. I mean literally, it is THE place to go there. There are very few other options and El Som is always consistent. I have come here over the years more times than I can count. Every time that I visit now, or when family from out of town came, El Som is always assumed to be on the list of places to go somewhere in the duration of the trip. Anyone who is familiar with Dickinson or used to live there knows El Som and misses it dearly. They are best known for their white queso. It really is fantastic. It’s thick and creamy and super addicting. People I know that have had El Som queso try so hard to find a close match to it all over out of state at other Mexican restaurants, but nothing can quite beat it. I’ve always liked El Som. If you don’t know what to get, their famous dish is the “P5” chicken and rice smothered in queso. But I quite like their fajita quesadilla. As I was in town, I visited here again pretty recently, and I felt less than impressed. In fact, I was actually kind of grossed out going this time. The restaurant is just kind of crusty and in the 10+ years I’ve been going it has hardly changed. Most of the time this can be a really good thing for a restaurant but for El Som I feel that it isn’t. I don’t know. I don’t think it’s quite all it’s cracked up to be, but it’s slim pickings for food in little old Dickinson, ND, and no one knows actual good Mexican food. I suppose I might be back just because it’s one of the few options and only places to go, but I won’t be near as happy about it.
