Lingnerterrassen - Dresden

We had a couple of hours to spare and took the tram (no 11 Elbschlosser) for a wonderful vista of the city and the river. Wurst and Pils are helpfully on sale, didn't have time to go in the palace itself, maybe next time, but not on a Sunday I believe it is very busy.

If you are in Dresden for a few days venture out of town on the no 11 tram and find this elegant 'schloss' given to the city a century ago after the death of Mr Lingler who made a fortune in oral hygiene. Outside terraces lovely on a fine evening, but inside great too (we had drink outside with blankets round us provided) and good food.

What better way to spend a warm evening than eating on a terrace with magnificent views over the Elbe, then watching the sun set and the lights of central Dresden come on, while sipping a very nice dessert wine? The former Lingner Castle, a 19th century neoclassical building which is still undergoing restoration, now houses a medium-price restaurant and a beer garden. Either or both are worth the short trip from the middle of Dresden on the number 11 tram, at least on a fine day (the restaurant has indoor seating, but it's the view from the terrace that really makes it). The restaurant menu majors on traditional German dishes, albeit lighter and with less potato than many places - I had carrot and orange soup, followed by calves' liver, both of which were good, and the service was efficient and friendly. Many of the menu options were available in smaller portions, good for children or for adults watching their waistlines! Slightly oddly, wines were available only by the glass, which of course increases the mark-up.

We came to the restaurant around sunset time. the view is gorgeous, and there is a very good atmosphere especially for couples. we ordered rump steak and weiner schnitzel, both was very tasty. it is a great place to for dinner.

Fantastic riverside spot set in stately grounds. Easy to reach via tram 11 from the old town. Self or full service Biergarten. Unbeatable especially when the good weather is with you. Don't miss the vines directly below the terrace.
