One of a large number of circular strong points constructed along the Kent and Sussex coast, to keep Napoleon out! Several still survive, I have never been inside of one, I shall have to visit this one when it is open One close by has been converted into a house, a difficult job, as the walls are several feet thick
This place is truly fascinating and definitely worth a visit, as it's the only Martello tower that still has its original cannon! The volunteer staff are friendly, helpful, and very knowledgeable. The structure has been thoughtfully restored with reconstructions, although at the moment, they are getting ready for restoration work, so some artifacts were missing or wrapped for protection. The views of Dymchurch and the channel from the gun platform are spectacular!
The staff was extremely helpful. The cannon on the deck is a must-see.
This place is definitely worth an hour of your time. While there are many Martello towers along the south coast, few are actually open to the public. This one has been restored to its original design and is managed by a team of knowledgeable and enthusiastic volunteers.
