The Trout Point Lodge is beautiful and the service is great. They really make sure that their guests are well taken care of and are aware of all of the wilderness activities available. The session with their on-site astronomer was really educational and a wonderful way to end an evening...especially since there is really nothing else to do and 45 minutes away from any kind of town on horrible roads!Although the food is good and wonderfully prepared, this is where the problem comes in. They have a very limited menu (maybe 1-3) entrees a night, but they do try to accommodate any special dietary needs. The weird thing is that they will run out of a menu item before an entire room has been served. It got to be a joke among the guests! For instance on our last night (we were there for four) they had a lovely lobster caesar salad on the menu as an appetizer. Our whole room of four couple wanted that, however when they got to our room to take the dinner order, there was only one left! This happened every night with either an appetizer, salad or entree. The owners (also the chefs) simply do not know how to shop. It does not surprise me, because they kind of lurk around the premises and never greet or approach guests. It was very odd. I guess it is that same stingy spirit that goes into the food prep and shopping. It's too bad...the food is really good and the rest of the staff wonderful to deal with.
Lunch and dinner is by a fixed price limited menu, but it's excellent. Everything changes every day, so you don't get bored eating the same things. Service was very friendly and attentive. Great wine list, though wine service could be a bit more knowledgeable, you have to remember you're in the middle of the wilderness!
This was the only place we stayed in Nouvelle Ecosse that really stood out in terms of the food preparation--flavour, freshness really excellent.
After tripping though Nova Scotia for 10 days, we ended up at Trout Point before catching the ferry to Maine. The food was outstanding--the highlight of our trip and one of the best meals we have had anywhere. The menu is limited, but everything was superb. Make sure you let them know well in advance of any allergies.
