Spent the day at the Scotland Rugby Match and after a wet walk back into the city centre we needed a quick drink and sit down before our dinner reservation at a nearby restaurant. Was informed by a pub next door that children were allowed into 7pm so no issues with going in with my kids. The bar was busy so we ordered and then took our drinks outside. The seating area outside was wet after the last downpour and we were provided with blue roll to wipe down the seats. No offer was made by the staff to wipe the seats down for us. We made oursleves comfortable but sadly after a few minutes the rain started again. I used my initiative and put up the large garden parasol next to us. A tourist from New Zealand who was sat at the next table alone joined us at our table to shelter from the rain and finish her drink. Next thing a member of staff suddenly appeared and chastised me for touching the umbrella. She stated that the umbrellas were not allowed to go up. I apologised and asked if was against their licensing plan. She said no but customers cannot touch the brolly's due to Health and Safety. I informed the staff member that it was the same brolly i had in my back garden so i was more than competent at operating it and we were getting wet. The most disappointing thing is the staff member put the brolly back down making the outdoor space totally unusable. Why? Yes tell me off if you want for touching the brolly. Best practice would be to have signs up asking patrons not to touch them. We left as there was no tables within. Would possibly have had a second drink if we were allowed to sit for longer outside. Went walking to our restaurant and saw all local pubs had their brollys up and patrons enjoying a drink outdoors. Really disappointing.
Rose street is a great place to find pub food. Newton is perfect for tourist. The vibe is local and well, the food was ok. The wings were, frankly, terrible as they were burnt and the whiskey sauce was not good. The fish and chips, on the other hand, were very good. Let me add that the staff was very nice. An average spot in a beautiful city.
Visited twice and both times lapped up the syrup sponge and custard. Friendly staff and clean and comfortable
Freshly cooked food. Might not be the most salubrious bar in Edinburgh but the staff were great and the food was freshly cooked to order.
