The owners Armando and Joana take great pride in their establishment. Armando speaks fluent English and is a great and welcoming host. Take the dinner recommendations of the waitstaff. Try the house wine, the local custard cake (Toucinho do Ceu I think) and definitely try the Gypsy Cake- chocolatey and good. We tried the lamb dish and a pork dish. Yumm. We were very pleased with everything-service, fresh food, price and wine. We enjoyed our conversation with with Armando and hope to return.
Although it took us two tries to find this restaurant, it was worth it. At first, the menu was confusing, with some soup like dishes costing €9 or so but the very helpful waitress explained that there were main courses; we could split one if we liked but one was too big for one person's starter. (Always nice to be stopped from over ordering in a restaurant, I think profits aren't everything). We asked her for a recommendation and both of us ended up getting variations of lamb, one a stew and the other a roast lamb on fried potatoes. Both were delicious and filling and, with the bread cheese and olives to start, we were very replete after the meal. We asked the waitress if there was a local digestif we could try and she obliged, producing a luminous yellow liqueur made from water mint, the name I can't remember but it was very nice indeed. There were a few tables in there when we arrived and there only seemed to be one cook and one waitress, so they were busy but the service was very good. Also liked the location away from the main tourist trap square in Evora, where I suspect one might be overcharged for worse food! Worth a visit.
Friendly service, good english, slightly difficult to find location. Good food, fish meat, housewine just fine, good prices. Recommended.
The expérience we had was totally different than the ones written previously... We had even the impression than the waitress with a constant smile on her face and quite nervous) was sorry to serve so poor food... I ordered the roasted lamb and get the stew instead, with more bones than meat.I can do much better myself at home... My wife ordered the sea bass and get a very little piece with a few vegetables served absolutely plain.. The red wine house was nearly undrinkable and the white absolutely blank... OK, prices are low, but are very expensive for what you get .... Nearly all restaurants in Evora offer the same thing 5 6 different dishes) and seem to survive in serving the less costly cuisine to balance the lack of clients... It was a nice September evening and all of them were nearly empty. I will recommend to chose your restaurants among the five first listed on this site
This restaurant is situated in one of the cobbled lanes of Evora's Old Town and the building has a long history and much character. The menu is regional, serving traditional dishes from the Alentejo. The migas was excellent and the acorda (served on the next table) smelled delicious as it wafted past. This is by no means a fancy restaurant. It is down to earth and the focus is on the quality of the cuisine and providing a warm welcome. If you want a posh restaurant, this isn't the place for you. But if you are looking for a really good, traditional Alentejan restaurant where the focus is on the food and getting an impression of what this region of Portugal is all about, then this is definitely worth a visit. The wine list was very reasonably priced (it is difficult to go wrong in the heart of the Alentejo's wine country) and the home-made desserts (shown in a glass case) are worth trying too. I loved chatting with the proprietor, found the food tasty and hearty and would have no hesitation in returning to this value-for-money, honest restaurant.
