Rauda Husid - Eyrarbakki

I heard that Rauða Húsið (the Red House) had one of the best humarsúpa (Icelandic lobster soup) around so I made the hour-long drive from Reykjavík to try it. Although we arrived a little early for our reservation, we were immediately seated. The restaurant did not start getting busy until 6-7pm. In addition to the lobster soups we ordered (2 for 6580kr), we also had the lamb (6590kr), the cod (5990kr), and the lobster pasta (5990kr). The portion sizes were quite large and the presentation was beautiful. Personally, my favorite was the cod fillet as the risotto underneath was perfectly cooked and the fish was juicy and flaky. The lamb was absolutely massive and a tad too overcooked but the mashed potatoes and honey glazed carrots were very hearty. My least favorite dish was the pasta because the sauce veered on the sweet side and the langoustine tails perched atop were a little mushy in the center. As for their famous lobster soup, it was impressive but not my favorite. I loved the splash of cognac in the soup, which was creamy and filled with langoustine tails, but the star anise left a very sweet and licorice-like aftertaste that threw me off. Overall, this was a lovely restaurant with lots of charm and good food at reasonable prices. If you are in the area, I would definitely recommend stopping by. PS- They take AmEx!

Fantastic lobster bisque and freshly baked bread in a cozy restaurant. This restaurant is set in a quaint village on the lighthouse trail in Southern Iceland. It was the perfect stop on a cold, rainy day in Iceland.

This restaurant is very elegant. The atmosphere is fantastic, the food is outstanding, and the service is excellent. What more could you ask for?
