Jambo Cafe & Bar - Footscray

Inner west Melbourne has a rough diamond called Footscray. Several kms from the city center and only two train stops from the Southern Cross Station, Footscray was always famous for its big market, cheap and delicious Asian food and more recently for its 'African village', a number of dotted African cafes, bars and restaurants. JAMBO is the coolest of all. Cheap and authentic Ethiopian food is available for lunch, take-away and dinner (Vegetarian combo is highly recommended) with coffees and any type of drinks as well. It hosts fantastic African jazz on weekend nights, when the atmosphere becomes totally fun and electric, people move with vibes and enjoy themselves to the core, yet no cover charge is imposed and no entry fee charged!! You can order cocktails much cheaper than anywhere else I know, and oh man, they have some sexy names! How attractive is that!!! Everyone is welcome in this buzzing place, you will be greeted with smiles and warm welcome every time. Don't miss this little gem!!

We love Jambo! What a little gem. The food is fresh and sizing and pricing super good value. Some lovely Ethiopian wines on the list and also cocktail specials. But mostly we come to enjoy food and the music from top jazz musicians and some on the more funkier side - if you get lucky you'll get a guest appearance from a touring artist from Jazz fest etc which is a special event indeed! This is a cafe style place so nothing fancy but comfortable and friendly. My one thing to change would be the beer garden - a bit of jazzing up would be good as it feels like an afterthought - some more plants and heaters and fittings wouldn't go astray!

Should you decide to come back on a weekend night, you are guaranteed to have a share of electric atmosphere with a live band and African Jazz, people dancing their night away and having a fantastic night without paying an entrance fee or cover charge on drinks! This venue is exactly what multicultural Footscray needed!!!

I absolutely adore this restaurant! I have visited multiple times and even celebrated my partner's birthday here with a party of about 30 guests. The food is consistently delicious and the owner is extremely friendly and welcoming. He always takes great care of us. One of the best perks of having a birthday celebration here is that they provide cake, but even without it, the food is still amazing and reasonably priced!
