Our lunch comprised the following:Thali – Yellow basmati rice, Poori, sambar, rasam, raitha, potato, chick peas, aubergine, and hot spicy chicken curry. The rice was perfectly cooked - grainy and yet soft. The poori was not puffy as we thought it would be but still quite edible. The sambar was delicious with lentils and various vegetables including drumstick. The potato was spicy and the chick peas a milder complement, though a tad mushy. The aubergine was especially flavoursome. The fiery hot chicken curry was yummy and the raitha was a fitting soother. There was also a yummy sweet desert which we think may have been barfi or something quite similar in taste and appearance. Overall, a sumptuous lunch platter.Uthappam – 2 serves with sambar and two coconut chutneys – one spicy hot and the other mild. The uthappam was a thick dosa-like pancake with onion and tomato topping. Quite delicious with the sambar and chutneys. Also, tasted good with the chicken curry from the thali.Idly – 4 with sambar and two coconut chutneys. The idly was beautifully prepared – just the right texture, soft and spongy and very palatable. As with the uthappam, this went well with the sambar and the chutneys. In addition to our sit-down meals, we bought 2 Urid Vadas and 2 Channa Vadas as takeaways. The channa vadas were hot and spicy and the urid vadas were also delicious, though slightly less spicy. The best tasting vadas we have had in a long while. This was a very substantial lunch for the two of us – every bit enjoyable. We give top marks to the chef for these Sri Lankan dishes. The flavours were refreshingly authentic. This is a gem of a restaurant, despite its café-like atmosphere and unpretentious décor. Sandeep, the manager, was most welcoming and helpful. No doubt, we would be returning for more weekend Sri Lankan meals at Shanti.
When Shanthi was the chef/supervisor we used to get excellent delecious in the restaurant and as well as take away. The management has changed few years ago and found the quality has gone down.
On Thursday 9th March 2017, we visited Shanti Indo-Lankan at lunchtime. Rather than dine-in, we choose to buy two take-away curries, namely Bombay Beef and Fish Vindaloo. We requested that our Bombay Beef be medium and the Vindaloo be hot, made for Indian palettes rather than for Western taste-buds. We waited for some 20 minutes while our dishes were being prepared. The restaurant seemed to be doing a brisk take-away business, given the customers who came to collect their phone-in orders. The restaurant was not flash but comfortably air-conditioned. It appears that they serve mainly standard Indian dishes during weekdays and offer Sri Lankan dishes during weekends. The restaurant is closed on Tuesdays, as we found out to our dismay when we went there the previous Tuesday at lunchtime. The Fish Vindaloo was hot and spicy with the familiar vinegary, tangy taste. This was rather authentic in flavour and satisfying to our seasoned palettes. The complimentary basmati rice that accompanied the dishes was well prepared – fluffy and grainy. The Bombay Beef was slightly milder in spiciness, as expected, and very palatable. This had a distinctive taste of tomatoes and onions. A few of the beef pieces were a tad tough, but we enjoyed the flavours nevertheless.
Went here last night and had a goat vindaloo and chicken madras. It was very easy to tell that both curries were cooked from scratch and I seriously have never had a better madras by a country mile. One of my dining companions did not like things too hot so he ordered the vindaloo mild (who orders vindaloo mild?!?!), but they graciously offered mt fresh green chilli or chilli powder as sides to spice mine up. Funnily enough though the madras had some dried chillis in it that were blast-force hot but easily avoidable if you don't like hot food. The goat was tender and on-the-bone, and the naan was also one of the best I have had. This was seriously some of the best indian food I have ever eaten. Can't wait to go back and try the masala dosa as I am yet to find a good one in Australia (and it is a rare restaurant that makes them), or the tiffin specials, or the thali..... MmmmmDon't expect much in the decor, and I have no idea what the buffet is normally like (it wasn't operating on the Tuesday night we went there) but if you want good erasonably priced food, I definitely recommend.
Interesting menu and it ends there ,Visited Sunday evening , buffet bar was looked unappetizing , so opted for menu . Again, menu had very interesting choices but when we received our meals , realised it was not very appetizing meals . Biryani was just rice and chilli powder , payasam was bland .In short , not a very Indian restaurant .
