Unfortunately through the magic of time I forgot about it the name, location, everything. The one thing I remembered though is the food was great. As luck would have it, roughly 3 years later, I'm out working in the area and stumbled in. The food was just as good (if not better), and I'm leaving a review so I don't forget it again.
I like to eat in relatively unknown places, with high ratings and good reviews. To me, Cabbage Heads is that type of a place, existing quietly in between the cities of the Midwest. Although probably well known in its community. And I don't mind people stopping their conversation as I walk in either, even though I'm not lost. I enjoyed the soup of the day which came with my meal. I got the fried perch dinner. I've been perching on Lake Michigan before and I've used corn meal or flour, they use corn meal here which is fine because it adds a little crunch which I like and that crunch, well it reminds me thin crust pizza. Sorry (not really) for the run on sentences, I'm trying to conjure the ire of our English majors. Back to the food, can you believe that they serve a blue gill dinner!! I'd have to fish all day to get enough pan fish for a dinner or two. They order theirs from a fish farm close by. FYI, the steak sandwich was decent and cheese curds were superb and generous. Of course, they serve New Glarus (Spotted Cow on tap) here. Plenty of pahking in the private lot. Tell them Go Bears and Bear down and that Gerry T sent you as you walk in!! I may have to come back for the Blue Gills, Sun Fish, Black Crappie dinners, hope they have that too.
Often times at these Wisconsin dive-bar-esque haunts you are not likely to find a veggie burger. I was super excited to see I could get a mushroom-portabella burger here! It's greasy and exactly what you need when you're eating bar food. The inside is super cozy and really has small-town Wisco vibes. You will probably feel a bit out of place if you are not a local (we sure did) but you'll settle in nevertheless. The cutest couple own the place. The cheese curds are solid (wayyyy better than what you'd find at Culvers). It's a little off the beaten path, but was a fun place to stop. Also, there is a photo of a baby with cabbage on its head in the bathroom. Right on brand.
This neighborhood bar offers reasonably priced drinks and standard pub food. The standout dishes are the soup and chili. Don't expect a trendy atmosphere, but the outdoor patio is a pleasant spot to relax with friends and enjoy a beer while passing through.
