The restaurant overlooking the Thames is beautiful and romantic. But watch the prices as they add taxes and charges of 12.5% making it an overpriced place.
The thing that I enjoy most about the Trafalgar is the light that come in off the Thames, passing through the large bay windows and flooding the restaurant. Its invigorating, that and the meandering muddy river. The food has always been good here, meat and fish, but being by the river I also go for the fish, and am never disappointed. In my opinion the specialty here is the White Bait, washed down with a pint. The staff are usually very accommodating and helpful too, so I have no complaints. I'm a regular and will continue to be.
After many excellent meals at the Trafalgar Tavern, last Sunday lunchtime was a slight disappointment because it was a bit below par. I have never seen the place so crowded however our table was ready on time and the service as attentive as ever. However, the meal was a little less excellent than usual. One friend had to send back her French Fries because they were leathery and cold (the replacements were excellent) and the taste of my roast beef was completely overwhelmed by the overpowering strength of the gravy. If we had never eaten at the Trafalgar Tavern before we would have been very happy with the meal that we had there but we had, so we were a bit disappointed. But it was a very busy day so perhaps they had some excuse.
The Trafalgar Tavern gives you huge portions of Sunday lunch. It gives you huge portions of most things (the fishcake starter is main course size) but especially of Sunday lunch. To be fair, they warn you: the menu tells you that the roast chicken is half a roast chicken, and it is. But there's quality as well as quantity: the meat and vegetables are carefully sourced and cooked. And views of the river, too. The only caveat is that it's a pub, and a popular one. The restaurant part might have serious-ish gastropub furniture and glassware, but the atmosphere is pub. If you're worried that it might be too pretentious for your family get-together, don't be. Just don't go expecting library-like calm.
