Cuckoo has a long and important place in greytowns culinary scene. Prior to being cuckoo it was a special cafe which was going to be a hard act to follow. The young first owners set the pizza menu, nicely giving each type a bird name, and creating what was clearly the best pizzas (as well as pasta) in the region. When the second owners took over we held our breath would they get rid of the old favourites fortunately they didn't sensible but instead added cheesecakes as well! I'm not sure as to the sense but I'm sure some people like cheesecake personally I loath the creatures. Recently under third ownership and now with the old villa hemmed in by a newly built real estate agents, the breath holding occurred again. And once more the pizzas with the ornithological names remain safe. Service is good, relaxed and friendly. The beer list is getting better with each owner. The pizzas are the same if not better. My favorite has always been the albatross a rare smoked fish pizza that I sometimes recreate at home. Blackbird is also delicious. The potato pizza last time I had it could do with a little more salt or preferably capers and anchovies otherwise it can be a bit bland. The new owners may have adjusted that however. The restaurant is in a rumpty old student villa that could have been shipped up from the Dunedin campus. Highly recommended for the pizzas.
I visited Cuckoo for a special romantic dinner on a whim, and was delightfully rewarded. The theme of the place is wonderfully kiwi tearooms with a wedge of Alice in Wonderland. The fantastic marinated olives (in caraway and orange zest) were grand, served in a dainty gold leafed tea cup. The heartwarming lasagne was a generous serve and probably the best one I have ever had! The wine listed reflected the italian influences of the menu, as well as the local wairarapa location. Candle light guided through a spectacular pizza, half and half with great flavours available, on a traditional thin base so not to leave you too full for the vast array of house made cheesecakes available we took ours home for supper. The service was heartwarming, attentive and they are real locals, these guys care about making your experience great. I am taking a crew from work for a small do next week, as the converted old villa has many separated areas for dining, both small and intimate, as well as roomy.I think some '50 's or 60 's pop music would compliment the place really well tho. That 's the only thing. We had a great experience and at a very resonable price note, very good value wine list! Bargains!
This is a great cafe, our favourite in Greytown. Fantastic pizzas and yum sticky date pudding! Try the delicious breakfast pizza. Interesting decorations. Has a fire going in winter and alfresco dining in summer. Sit and watch the world go by!
Cosy restaurant<br/ <br/ This cosy little restaurant is in a converted house with a real wood fireplace which makes it a lovely spot to have dinner on a winters evening. We ordered a pasta and the eggplant parmigiana for dinner both meals were delicious but we thought that the portions were a little on the small side!
