Phoenix Hotel - Gympie Regional Council

We always say we will order something other than a steak when we go to The Phoenix but we simply cannot go passed their Black Angus Rump! There is a gorgeous back deck to enjoy a lunchtime drink and a gambling room if you are into that! Just wish they didn't have Keno in the dining room as it isn't my thing.

Who would have thought chicken and seafood could be so good? Chicken breast, 1/2 Moreton bay bug, prawns in a creamy garlic sauce on mash - divine. Not cheap $28 but as a treat it was great.

We have eaten here several times and each time the meals have been very good. There is a big variety on the menu to choose from.

We went to the Gympie Mining Museum yesterday and decided to find a pub for lunch afterwards. We asked one of the locals working at the museum where was a good place to go and he recommended the Phoenix Hotel.The Phoenix Hotel was on our original list so off we went.The Phoenix is an old hotel with some new bits added .. so we sat on one of the new bits being the veranda.Two of us ordered the seafood basket which was confusing because it came on a plate .. no sign of a basket ... and our friends had the roast lamb.The seafood basket is probably the template for all seafood baskets served at pubs and was nice to eat but not really outstanding .. our friends said their meals were really nice but again, fairly standard for a "pub meal".The venue is really pleasant and the service quick with all staff friendly and efficient.The others in the group were drinking wine but I decided to have a Guinness and I have to say it was probably the nicest Guinness I have had in Australia and I have had Guinness in Dublin, London, Bangkok and Thailand. Given that this pub was recommended by a local, and it would have been impractical for us to order and eat everything, I would say give it a try as there may be hidden gems in that menu

The food is pretty average for the prices charged. The portion sizes are substantial but it's more quantity over quality
