Tan Malie Se Winkel - Hartbeespoort

Tant Malie se Winkel is a restaurant with a difference: You can eat from the usual restaurant menu, but you also have the option of cooking your own on an open fire. The vast majority of patrons choose the latter, and Tant Malie se Winkel has a vast outdoor shady space where people can sit under shady trees, take in the view of the Magaliesberg valley (just below the dam wall) and grill their own meat.<br/ <br/ We opted for the latter, and were not disappointed. A base cover charge is levied for supporting menu items such as 6 fresh salads, pap tomato gravy, home baked bread with butter and an assortment of homemade jams. These are provided 'buffet style ', help yourself. Then comes the meat selection, priced 'a la carte ', which everyone chooses for themselves, straight from the 'butchery '. Meat selection is good, only outdone by the exceptional quality of the cuts. Beef, lamb, chicken and various sosaties and homemade boerewors are on offer. I 'd recommend the boerewors as I consider it to be among the top 3 in the country. My group selected butterflied fillet steak, T Bone steak, Fillet sosaties and of course, the boerewors. <br/ <br/ When we got back to our table, the drinks had arrived (they have a reasonable winelist), and the fire had been provided by a helper (who had arrived with a wheelbarrow full of hot glowing coals). Because my group mostly preferred medium rare, we didn 't waste time putting the coals to work and grilling (braaing) the meat. It 's great having a fire so nearby the table, because a piece that turns out to be too rare can either be done further, or even warmed up if you are a slow eater and it has cooled down too much. Plates are the enameled tin variety which contributed to the rustic experience. My group all enjoyed the boerewors and sosaties, and the fillet steak simply melted in our mouths. T bones were also very tender and flavourful. <br/ <br/ After lunch, we explored the desert menu (Melktert), and had coffee in enameled tin mugs. <br/ <br/ Pricing is comparable with all other restaurants (i.e. do not expect a discount because you cooked the meat yourself).<br/ <br/ A great way to spend a lazy afternoon will be back.

It is a nice place. We ate breakfast here. The prices are a bit high for the portions that you get, but either than that, enjoyed the outdoor seating.

You should really take your time when you visit this jewel in Harties. The food is delicious just like granny cooked it and there is a good variety on the menu. Staff is friendly and service is good. You can also buy some tasty rusks, weskus bokkoms and all sorts of other goodies in the shop.
