Recently, the staff has been brightening the place up, which is a shame. The Rathskeller should maintain a dark yet cozy atmosphere (think Hygge). Additionally, the music selection can be quite inconsistent. They seem to be experimenting with various acts, which, while quirky, doesn’t contribute to a cohesive ambiance. A playlist of old-time jazz, swing, and blues would be much more fitting. This venue has the potential to be a fantastic speakeasy, and it may have even served that purpose in the past. If they fully embraced that concept, it could become a unique gem in all of Montana. Finally, for those intrigued by ghosts, this building is rumored to host quite a few spirits. Overall, it’s definitely worth a visit. If everything comes together, you’re in for a fantastic experience at the most unique bar in town. If not, you can always head upstairs for some of the best craft cocktails around while contemplating your next move.
For my first drink, I tried the Montana Old Fashioned ($11), which features Montana Trapline Rye from Glacier Distilling Company. It's on the sweeter side, likely because the rye itself is already quite sweet, plus there's a sugar cube added. It was very enjoyable. My second drink, the Lady Germain ($11), had a nice tartness from the lemon but was overall well-balanced. Even though the bar was nearly empty during my visit, I can see it being a lively spot when it’s full. Apparently, they sometimes have live music, which adds to the atmosphere. I also want to give a big shoutout to my bartenders, Rudi and Meggy, for being so friendly and welcoming to someone from out of town!
The Montana Club is the bomb and the Rathskeller is where you want to start your evening in Montana's capital city. It's like being in a 1920s speakeasy-dark, shadowy spaces (but overall well lit), pressed leatherole walls (hey look it up) and great bands on the weekend. But you want a Rathskeller to deliver great cocktails. Home run! Perfectly balanced Old Fashioned created out of Montana Rye. Then stunning sidecars--the best I have had outside of Chicago. Awesome!!
Great ambiance. Good service. Great food and drinks
