We have been waiting a couple of years now for them to return or re-open, we were hopeful. They were one of our fave late night options. However, it turns out, they will not be back. It's official now. They will be replaced by a different restaurant and I will post here an update once we know what it is, and it's open. We will miss the food here, especially the delicious congee. They had the best congee in Houston.
The best meal I had on our entire Texas road trip (which included visiting and eating throughout San Antonio, Austin, and Houston). Well, the best Cantonese meal. Hong Kong Food Street, contrary to its name, is a pretty nicely established restaurant. The look and feel instantly took me back to Canton, and the speed of service? Deserved nods! One of the most fun things of eating at an authentic Cantonese restaurant is reviewing the abundant picture menu. Good luck picking out your dishes as all the graphics jump out of their glossy pages at you! There 's nothing strip mall Chinese about this place. From the plating to the flavors, served-cold dishes to piping hot soup based dishes, veggies to meats, fried items ' crispiness to stir-fries ' wok hey... I felt like being in HK! I recommend this restaurant for anyone who comes to Houston 's Chinatown wanting authentic Cantonese food, and will definitely revisit myself if I ever travel there!
To summarize, Hong Kong Food Street HKFS can be your humble, go to Chinese restaurant; 4 star suggests I'm likely to go out of my way to come back. The restaurant's look is a bit dated with off white tile with black grout. Tables are large and equipped with hand made lazy susans with some designs on them actually kind of cool . Out of 6 dishes I tried yesterday, my top 2 recommendations are: 1. Peking duck $38 I like how the duck is cut and laid out. Each piece is lined with a square of crispy duck skin. HKFS uses fluffy, white, taco style baos and the usual condiments: hoison sauce, sliced cucumbers, and sliced green onions. The duck also comes with a complimentary duck broth soup with some bok choy inside. Creamy and delicious, and best of all free. Somewhat of an expensive option, but it's a tasty set that you could easily feed 3 4 people on alone. We had to pack up the rest of the soup since we ran out of belly space. 2. Japanese eggplant and beef tips dark horse we've been on an eggplant craze lately and have taken a liking to the various ways restaurants prepare the plant. My goodness, it's delicious. Not too salty and somewhat sweet. Texture is nice cooked to the right firmness. If you're getting the dish for the beef you might find yourself disappointed, pleasantly surprised, or with mixed feelings. Just remember the beef is to compliment the star of the show eggplant !
I came with a group of around 15 people and the staff was very accommodating and helpful with choosing dishes and trying to fit everything we ordered on the table. We ordered a lot of dishes but the stand out ones were the pork and thousand year egg congee, wonton soup, fried fish, and the warm tofu pudding dessert. I did notice that some of their dishes tasted exactly the same and had the same spices (or lack of spices). Besides the dishes I mentioned above, the rest were pretty bland and seems to only be seasoned with salt or fried. Portion sizes are large but the price is also steep.
A pretty decent spot for authentic Cantonese food! You actually feel like you are in Hong Kong when you step inside the restaurant. The staff here isn't very friendly, but they are quick and efficient. The major downside is that the food is very overpriced. You can get similar options at Mein at a far cheaper price. On this particular experience, I came with a group of friends, and we decided to indulge ourselves. My personal favorites would have to be the spicy pork ribs and the salt and pepper squid. I normally order these two items at every Chinese restaurant. They came out very crispy with just the right amount of saltiness. They even have unique items like congee, which is perfect in the cold weather. Overall, my experience here was just alright! The food was good, but nothing special. The same could be said for the service. If I am craving more authentic Cantonese items, I will probably be back in the future!
