I met Javier about 19 yrs ago, and he told me about this place he and his wife owned. It's about 45 min from my house, but I had their homemade burritos playing Poker at Adolfos in Lemoore in 2001. It was a weekly order dozen chili Colorado, dozen chili verde. I miss this place. I miss Javier, would love any info if his wife is still cooking at a diff joint.
It's a bit out of the way, and English isn't particularly useful, but if you want really good food in an authentic and warm atmosphere, it's well worth the drive. I'll be going back next time I drive up the central valley!
In the farm town of Huron, the Mexico Cafe seems to be a regular hangout among the regulars, a restaurant by day and pool hall at night. Only Spanish is spoken, but your basic high school Spanish is fine. Indeed this is one of the few Mexican restaurants in the US where you will be encouraged to speak, no matter how rudimentary. The food was a standout. The garlic shrimp I ordered consisted of high-quality med-large shrimps in the shell, sautéed well. The rice and bean accompaniment, usually forgettable, was truly excellent with a smoothness, richness, and subtlety rarely experienced with this dish. Service was helpful and pleasant. The only downers were the prices which were equivalent to Santa Monica. The items listed over the bar seemed far cheaper. Also the bathrooms, though functional, were not pleasant. If I return to Huron, I will probably order one of the hearty Mexican stews called Caldos.
Came to eat here today as we were passing by. Food was amazing at an affordable price. If you come to Huron it's a must to eat here. The service was great and the waitress was very accommodating.
Decided to venture off the freeway into town to grab something other than fast food. And we came upon this lovely place. Our broken Spanish and the waitress' broken English were a fun combo that resulted in great customer service and amazing food! Uno mas por favor!! I'm so glad we stopped in.
