Flugplatz - Idar-Oberstein

IF you want a nice speissbraten (the local speciality) in a simple atmosphere this a a good place to go! Not real fancy, but consistently good food!

This resturant is very good and you can not beat the view. It is also fun to see the planes take off and land.

Just got back from Flugplatz. Not only was the food definitely worth it, the view from the back patio on a good day was amazing. The workers were all very friendly and did their best to communicate. The grounds the restaurant is on, is basically a smaller scaled air strip. while we were out there.It was cool watching home made airplane makers out there flying there planes.

The restaurant located at the small Idar-Oberstein Flugplatz was recommended by the owner of a Bed & Breakfast we stayed at this year while traveling through Europe. We ate at this restaurant on this trip and a prior trip in 2006. We were searching for a place that served the local favorite "spiessbraten". Spiessbraten is beef or pork with a special marinade and grilled over a open beechwood fire. The spiessbraten was grilled in front of us and the atmosphere and the food was great. The restaurant is off the beaten path, and all of the customers were locals, with virtually no one speaking english. The owners made us feel welcome, did their best to help us order, and we enjoyed the meals greatly. If we ever return to this area of Germany, we will be sure to stop and enjoy spiessbraten again.
