They definitely get less press than luminaries such as KC Masterpiece or JackStack, but they don't lack for fans. EVERYTHING at Smokehouse is as it should be. Briskets soak in the smoke for 20 hours. You won't find a better tasting piece of meat. Their sausage is coarse and meaty, bursting with hearty flavor. Ribs are perfect every time. I'm mourning the loss of fried okra as a side, but otherwise, there's nothing missing in this great restaurant. New openings in Zona Rosa and Overland Park have extended the reach of KC's best kept BBQ secret. I consider Smokehouse on a par with legendary Jack Stack (and both are superior to over-hyped KC Masterpiece . I'm a non-competition BBQ expert. (I've published books on the subject and I cater upon request. When I'm ready for someone else to serve me BBQ, there is only one other house I'd go to... Smokehouse.
The BBQ is always superb! Not only is the meat always excellent, but the sides are always top notch! I've tried the other big KC area names (Arthur Bryant's, Zarda's, Gates, K.C. Masterpiece), but they simply do not compare to the Smokehouse! My favorite meal at the Smokehouse is the Burnt Ends with baked beans and coleslaw. The last time I was in KC for work, I ate at the smokehouse every night!
Another review said that Smokehouse tries to be like Jack Stack. I've never eaten at Jack Stack, but Smokehouse is my all time favorite bbq around here. My only word of caution is that if you order grilled chicken it seems to always take awhile, but it's yummy and hot when it get to ya. Anything else, like steak or sandwiches, comes out much faster. Their bbq beans, cheesy corn, and fried corn nuggets are the best I've ever tasted.
Being a longtime fan of KC barbecue, I tried Smokehouse, or maybe I should say Jack Stack Lite . They 've completely taken everything from Jack Stack, all the way to naming their dishes the exact same. Is this legal? Well, they 've tried to copy Jack Stack, but the service wasn 't even close. The food was ok, but in this town, ok doesn 't cut it. The place could use some help in cleanliness, too. Sorry, I won 't be back. Might as well go to Jack Stack to experience the real deal in great barbecue, service, and cleanliness.
