There’s an impressive array of hotdog options to choose from! I tried the Dirty Sancho, which featured a tasty mix of mac and cheese, brisket, and corn salsa—it was incredible. I also had the Dognator, a bacon-wrapped hotdog topped with brisket and onion rings, and it really hit the spot. I can't wait to come back and try more of their dishes!
Upon entering the vibrant establishment, guests are welcomed by a colorful bar area adorned with an eclectic mix of pop culture art featuring WWE legends, members of Van Halen, baseball Hall of Famers, and Freddie Mercury's iconic mustache. The bar usually has a few open seats, and the tables can comfortably accommodate groups of four. The extensive menu is both impressive and user-friendly, with 97% of the core hot dog options available as meatless, and over half of them are optionally vegan. I personally enjoy the classic chili dog, which can be made with vegetarian or vegan chili, but if I’m feeling adventurous, I’ll go for the sauerkraut or something spicy. In my two years of visits, I’ve never had a disappointing dog. Unless you’re daring enough to try The Birthday Suit or experimenting with Your Wiener, the best deal in the house is the Wiener Basket ($12.95), which comes with a side of delicious hand-cut fries. There's also Wiener Wednesday, where you can indulge in whatever special they're offering that day for just $6—a fantastic option for those on a budget who don’t mind a surprise. For Chicagoans wandering down 4th Street yearning for Old Style, you’ll find it here, along with a decent Chicago-style dog. The drink menu is filled with cocktails under $10 and a range of local and not-so-local beers, including a tasty draft Frostytop root beer (non-alcoholic) and funnel cake fries for those with a sweet tooth. My group loves the $4 draft PBR—it's practically our lifeblood. THE BOTTOM LINE: If you’re looking for a casual lunch or dinner spot that offers great value without compromising on quality, you can’t go wrong here. There’s something for everyone, and despite the cheeky innuendos mentioned throughout this review, the place is surprisingly family-friendly too. I’m eagerly anticipating their upcoming collaboration with Ace of Cups! Additional notes: Dirty Frank's is conveniently accessible via a ramp directly from the sidewalk, and both restrooms are generally well-maintained. If you visit in winter and it’s crowded inside, the outdoor seating is heated. Metered parking is available on 4th Street and the side streets adjacent to Dirty Frank's, primarily managed through ParkMobile/ParkColumbus, with nearby paid lots mostly operated by Parking.com.
The service was efficient and prompt, and the prices were fair. The menu offered a good variety of options that were quite creative. However, the food left much to be desired. We ordered three hot dogs and no one was particularly impressed. One of the buns was overly soggy and fell apart easily. I regret choosing the veggie dog, as it lacked any flavor and resembled eating styrofoam. The fries were cut so thin that at times we were just eating the outer crisp without much potato inside. It felt unusual.
As soon as you enter Dirty Franks, you are greeted by a vibrant display of colors and eclectic decor. The staff truly embody exceptional hospitality, welcoming you with warm smiles and genuine enthusiasm that make you feel like a valued guest from the very start. For dinner, I enjoyed the Fried Mac and Cheese Hot Dog, accompanied by a refreshing Berry Cider and a side of crispy Tater Tots. Each bite was a harmonious blend of flavors, with the rich savoriness of the mac and cheese beautifully enhancing the juicy hot dog nestled in a toasted bun. The crunchy exterior of the mac and cheese added a delightful texture, while the tart sweetness of the berry cider offered a refreshing balance. With its lively atmosphere, outstanding service, and delicious dishes, it's no surprise that people come from all over to experience the charm of this beloved spot. Whether you’re a hot dog enthusiast or just looking for an unforgettable meal, Dirty Franks is sure to please, inspire, and leave you wanting more.
It has been a little while since my last visit, but I've had a couple of lunches here, and each time has been a great experience! The service has been excellent, the hot dogs are delicious, and they've really revamped the menu. While some of my favorites, like the kimchi dog, are no longer available, they've added new options like Takis that hit the spot. The hot dogs are hearty and satisfying, leaving no excess bun behind. The kitchen staff was busy managing a full house outside while my friend and I sat at the bar, which was, in my opinion, the perfect spot to enjoy a couple of dogs. I'm excited to hear they're opening on campus soon, as they seem ready to expand (and it will bring them closer to me!). Thank you for coming back and doing such a great job!
