This was one of the biggest and most pleasant surprises for having a business lunch. Every day changing menue of real pasta creations fine execution on the spot ordering by seeing, paying in self service and delivery at the table. Nice combination of deli selling and eating open for lunch and very moderately priced. Italy for people who know at really affordable moderate prices - nothing pretentious but extremely well performed with very good taste and finesse. Good food can be affordable - and the wines: a feast!
Your next stay-cation in Hannover, Germany could be in Italy. Stepping into this kitschy cool restaurant brings me right back to the boot where the people are livelier, the food is more flavorful, the atmosphere more vibrant, and you can interchange all three adjectives I just used to describe all three things. Housed in a huge rustic warehouse that started as a purveyor of fine Italian goods, this well kept secret in the rich industrial area of Hannover added a meat counter that soon started serving its own fresh creations which were so popular it turned into a restaurant with a menu that changes daily. Its patrons are local and loyal, coming every week if not every day, and we soon find out why: this is one of the only places you can get fresh authentic Italian food accompanied by, albeit only on Thursdays, live music and opera singing in Hannover.Although the restaurant doesn't make its own pasta except for raviolis on occasion, it certainly uses top notch pasta imported from Italy. I've been here twice now and the first time I had a spaghetti with sea snails and a light lemony and garlicky tomato sauce I almost cried because I hadn't seen sea snails on a menu since I moved to Hannover four years ago. The pasta was perfectly cooked and the delightfully funky and pungent sea snails were gentrified by the citrus and fresh notes of the tomato sauce. My friend had a simple vegetarian wide noodle pasta dish with chanterelles, blue cheese and pine nuts but the pine nuts were fried and so fragrant they, too, elevated the dish. They make all their own pizzas as well and they are also deserving of high praise. The ever changing variety of desserts and antipasti plates are also home-made for the most part and made with really fresh ingredients and when you come on a Thursday night, even the simplest of meals here make you feel like you're dining like a king in a courtyard in Italy.Perhaps that's what Piazza Italiana and good Italian cooking in general does so well. They take the simplest of ingredients and settings, make sure they are of good quality, and just by adding that extra special touch transform it into something exceptional. Bellissimo!
