I had high expectations for this place. The atmosphere is on point the tea was gorgeous but the dumplings and the dipping sauces were not that good. The dumpling wrappers were so gluggy i could still feel them between my teeth well and truely after i had downed the tea and left the restaurant. The fillings were tasty but there was no real freshness.
Came here first time with the mother-in-law after doing the antique shops in Islington. A great place to stop for tea. So many to choose from - I had the honey Roobois - it was great. Had some mixed dumplings to share and they were fab - chilli pastes were soooo good. Raved about it to hubby so took him a few weeks later. But he was not impressed. He was on a sugar free diet and was disappointed when the waitress couldn't tell him if the dumplings contained sugar... at this point I started to doubt whether the dumplings were made on site.My doubts were confirmed when I seen the waitress come out of the back with a commercial bag of frozen dumplings and popped them in the steamer ... :(I still enjoyed them though and I would go back again - but probably on my own with a book .... :)
I dined here last night with my husband and our daughter. We spotted the restaurant by accident as we drove past yesterday afternoon and were thrilled to know that we had a dumpling house in Newcastle. We booked straight away to dine there that night. Upon arrival it had a lovely cozy atmosphere, with a young lady providing live music. We placed our order and waited, and waited, and waited. In one hour we had been served 2 pork buns, some edamame beans and one serve of mixed dumplings. We waited and waited some more for the rest of the dumplings to come but gave up, paid for what we had eaten and left.It is such a shame, they just didn't seem to have the kitchen area or equipment to serve a restaurant full of people. When we arrived they weren't busy at all, it did get busy by the time we left but they should be able to serve a lot quicker than they did. The service was poor also. No one came to check on us or clear our plates and the table next to us was left full of dirty plates the whole time we were there. The dumplings are not made on site but appear to be either re-heated or cooked on site using a small steam oven, there could have been 2 steam ovens, I'm not sure, but they certainly need a lot more if they are going to continue.Every dumpling house I have been to is fast and efficient, the dumplings just keep on coming. It is a real shame as something like that would do exceptionally well in Newcastle as there is nothing like that here.Needless to say we won't be going back and will not be able to recommend Madame Mo's to anyone at this stage, hopefully they will get better in time.As I was paying the lady, who I think might have been the owner, she commented that it is hard to serve everyone when people don't book, can you believe that! Your a restaurant for goodness sake, people don't always book AND by the way, we did book and got the last table when we did so that excuse was a bit lame.Maybe it is just teething problems as they have only been opened a relatively short time. Lets hope so for their sake.Wish it had of been wonderful, but it wasn't, such a shame. It has the potential to be good.
I love to take people here who have never been before as they are truly amazed that they never know this place existed. It has a really lovely ambiance and is just a lovely dining experience. The menu isn't huge but has a range of Tibetan and Nepalese dumplings that are exquisite and a huge range of teas to accompany your dumplings. Different teas are served in different tea serving accoutrements just adding to experience.
