Do not make the mistake of driving past Maligne Canyon, not only is the view incredible, with the deep cutting that the river has created, but you will miss out on a great meal and the best souvenir shop in the park. When it comes to the food, the lunch selection looks at first glance to be your typical grill fare, Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Chicken, Fish, Soups and Sandwiches, but it's not. Nothing is pre-cooked, so prepare to wait while your food is cooked fresh to order, but you will appreciate the delay when you bite into your meal. Prices are the most reasonable that you will find in Jasper in fact they are as low as you will find in Edmonton or Calgary, if you check out their website you will find the lunch menu. New since we were last here is Slush machines, but not like you get at Macs or 7-11, these taste fresh, and are very refreshing. Also of note was the selection of Ice Cream, I would think that a Ice Cream on the patio on a warm day would be heavenly. The Gift shop located in the same building is the most amazing place, the selection of art rivals any art gallery. If you are looking for souvenirs of your trip to Jasper you need to stop here, I can tell you that this is the only place in Jasper where you will pay Suggested retail price on your purchases, they clearly do not have tourist pricing, the sale you the products for far less thanI have found in the valley.
I went for the afternoon tea with some coworkers. The food was presented very creatively and uniquely. Tasty sandwiches with a variety of flavor. Tea selection was pleasant as well.
After spending an afternoon walking/hiking through Maligne Canyon, Maligne Canyon Restaurant is a lovely spot to unwind. I have visited a few times now and particularly enjoyed my afternoon tea! Staff is friendly, food is great and the setting couldn't get any better.
Very occasionally in life, something so surprising happens that you can't actually believe it's true. So it was with us yesterday, when we visited Maligne Canyon in the Canadian Rockies. After our walk, we went to the tea house, expecting it to be a basic, grotty place selling bottles of water, stewed coffee and maybe packets of crisp; certainly, the write-up in the guidebooks promised nothing special, and the toilet facilities we had encountered in the area were, to say the least, basic. So imagine our surprise when we entered the building, to be greeted by an array of cakes, meals, sandwiches, drinks, ice-creams etc. We were so impressed with the place that we got chatting to the staff (who were lovely - even when my daughter spilt her cup of hot chocolate!), and during the conversation we learned that the place was also open for dinner three nights a week (including the night we were there). So taken were we by what we saw that we immediately booked to return for dinner, some three hours later! And we got yet another great surprise - excellent food, cooked, apparently, by a French chef (who we met) who takes a great pride in his cooking. My wife's tilapia was excellent, and was done in a really interesting way too, being stuffed with fig and basil. The fish and chips - though a little on the small side - were good too. We got chatting to our delightful server, Diana, who filled us in on the history of the place, and especially about the interesting background of the owner and the fascinating story of how a famous Canadian artist's work hangs in the restaurant. There is some serious art hanging up there, and indeed the whole building is full of unusual and expensive trinkets and ornaments. Diana described the restaurant as a hidden gem. She wasn't wrong. We just wanted them to make more of the place, to improve their profile. By the end of the evening, we had met the owners son and assured him we would do our bit to spread the word, so hopefully this review helps. You simply must give this place a try, even if it is just for afternoon tea.So why not a five star rating? Well, the fact that the restaurant was empty bar us and one other table meant that it lacked atmosphere, and the fact that none of the desserts on the menu were available, can't be ignored. But, in truth, these factors were more than compensated for by the wonderful service, the lovely people working there, the quality of the food, the amazing art, and the fact that it was all such a surprise find. We have probably had better meals during our four week vacation in Canada, but this will be the only one we will still be able to remember this time next year.
