Armadillos Cafe - Kaleen

After visiting the Dinosaur museum, we stumbled upon Armdillos Cafe. Annie and Chris warmly welcomed us, even making accommodations for our 6 month old. The savory crepe and salad were delicious, and it's rare to find cafes like this where the food is homemade and served by the owners. Our son particularly enjoyed their soup. If you're in the Canberra area, it's definitely worth a visit.

We were looking for a place to grab a bite to eat in Gold Creek with my disabled friend, so convenient parking was a must. After several unsuccessful attempts at other cafes, we decided to head towards Nicholls. Luckily, we stumbled upon this hidden gem by accident and were pleasantly surprised. The parking was easy, the staff were friendly, the food (waffles with fresh fruit) was delicious, and the atmosphere was calm and relaxing. We had the option to sit outdoors under cover or indoors to escape the heat, and we chose the latter. We are looking forward to coming back for another visit soon.

I’m writing this because I eat here at least three times a week and love it. I am in a business next door. I normally wouldn’t review but I noticed a review complaining that the kids are isn’t functioning, as if the cafe has anything to do with it. We’ve been asking our landlord to fix the dangerous roof in that area for about 18 months. It’s not the responsibility of the cafe or any of the tenants. Having said that, try the cafe because it’s yummy.

Took our toddlers to get a coffee before going to the dinosaur museum this morning. My just turned 3 year old was upset and needed his nappy changed so I asked after the toilets. They made comments about his behaviour. Once changed we were sitting outside with some drinks for the kids and coffees. When we started to leave my son got upset again not wanting to leave. She came out and told my son off, stating there was a meditation class on just there. It is always a struggle going out with toddlers and at no point before that point did she mention there being a meditation class on. To speak to my child like that clearly suggests she doesn't want children there. Maybe telling the customer before they purchase would help. It was also suggested we let them run on the grass down the hill that was close to the highway. Never again.

Want a serving of something you can make at home whilst living on a budget? Missing the 80s where anything goes? Well this is the cafe for you! Pay first. Just in case you don’t like the the sub par food when it’s delivered. There’s even a child’s play area just meters from the dining space. This place delivers on all fronts. Great signage setup to deliver ample disappointment for any child that discovers the play room only to find it’s empty with some roofing material “safely” strewn across the floor. If that’s not enough. The cafe worker demonstrates initiative and will parent your children without consent by yelling in a cruel and nonconstructive manner at the children attempting to make the play room playable. Because who cares about putting a closed sign or roping off an unsafe area? Not him. Why would you not consult the parent supervising and about to intervene, why would you? Better to verbally traumatise the child and their parent. Apparently reducing your clients to tears is the best form of service. It’s really reassuring to know this cafe treats everyone with dignity and respect. I was assured he wouldn’t have shouted at my 5 year old had he realised she was a customer. This is despite cheerily engaging with her at the table minutes prior. If you appreciate a sheepish, half hearted apology accompanied by a marshmallow and bruised strawberry then look no further. I strongly suggest lowering your expectations before visiting this establishment. Then lower them again.
