On the bench outside near the nearby “so” or lake, my Københavner mother broke up with her boyfriend Jack in the mid 1950’s. Which worked out well for me as she later met my Dad. I also fed swans as a child outside the Golden Swan as it was known in the 1960’s and 1970’s. When I visit my mother’s resting place at nearby Holmens Kirkegaard now in recent years, which is the nearby beautiful Royal Danish Graveyard, I always stop by here. It is one of my favorite restaurants in the world. My most recent visit was nothing short of heartwarming and exemplified the routine Danish spirit. You see, I was raised on Frikkerdiller or Danish meatballs. When I return to Denmark, I always order them. But after I wolfed down the three they brought me that most recent time, I was sadly disappointed to learn that’s all they made that day. So I ordered another Tuborg and glumly looked out at that little lake filled with water and memory. Twenty minutes later to my shocked delight, the waitress and owner came out beaming with a steaming fresh plate of my beloved frikkerdeller! What eatery have you ever been to that’s done that? The first place I’ll go when I’m vaccinated and the world is normal again is København and I’ll return here again and dream and eat and smile and sigh. Tak!
This used to be one of our local favourites, but the overall quality of the place has just gone downhill over the last year. Food is not bad, but not at all worth the price. Everything in the restaurant feels as if it has a layer of grease on it and our clothes smelled like pork and smoke when we left. It feels dirty and the service doesn't help the overall experience. I think we're done going there.
The food was ok, but the service could be improved. We felt a little like an inconvenience rather than welcome guests
We decided upon this restaurant for dinner as it overlooks the pretty lake. The menu seemed to be simple but hopefully a little Danish as we are visiting from Australia and like to try local food. The waitress barely greeted us, she seemed stressed or just plain unfriendly. We were seated and menus in Danish with English translation were given. There were a few other customers but not overly busy for the waitress to serve. I’m sorry but if you are in the service industry a smile doesn’t really take that much effort. When the food arrived- Old fashioned Danish hash and two serves of Weinerschnitzel we were taken aback with the enormous serves. The veal was okay, the fried potatoes and peas were quite nice. The hash was served with three over cooked eggs on top of an enormous mound of potatoes and inedible meat of some sort. It was cooked beyond recognition. The beetroot and sauce were okay. The drinks order of orange juice no ice, a coke and a beer came out as two Cokes (one with no ice, so she did partly hear the order) with no explanation of why there was no juice. We couldn’t be bothered asking why as I don’t think she could have cared less. I’m also afraid to say that the tablecloths were dirty, we watched the waitress sweep crumbs off the paper placemats instead of replacing and my mother said the ladies toilet was disgusting with water all over the floor. Overall not a very pleasant experience and tip was not given as it was not deserved. Service can often overcome average food but the ambiance was disappointing.
