If you love true experimental, locally sourced, wild fermented (sour) beer owned and operated by a lovely couple then this is absolutely your spot. A lot of work goes into their product and it shows. That said, if sour style isn't your jam then you might fight better options elsewhere.
I never like to disparage a local noncorporate place but this business definitely needs improvement. The beer is spontaneously fermented so every beer has the same yeast profile and therefore pretty much tastes the same. And that taste is sour. It doesn 't matter if it 's listed as an IPA or a Berliner; it 'll taste the same.It also won 't matter if the ingredients are locally farm sourced or the Chambourcin grapes are hand-destemmed. Sour will be the dominant taste. A very hipsterish place too. With only vinyl records for the music. Our server was pleasant. They 've been around since 2016 apparently so they 're doing something right.
Stopped here on spur of the moment on a trip. If you’re into unusual, sour, fermented, and wild beer this is the place for you. If you strictly like IPAs, they may now have some guest taps for you. But really, take a chance and try some of the main offerings! Super cool tasting room, very friendly host, great conversation and some backstory on the brewery. I’m about an hour and a half away but I’ll be back to try some more.
A one-of-a-kind gem for unique libations! Unconventional brewing techniques, adventurous flavors, and a rustic atmosphere are sure to please. We tried two beers and a wine and loved every drop! Melissa made us feel right at home and answered all of our questions about the processes they use to brew. The Referend is a great addition to the area!
