I was excited to have some sushi for lunch but there are limited options at that time of day, so we settled and decided to give this place a try even though many previous reviewers said the service was not so great. We arrived shortly after opening and were quickly seated at the sushi bar. The first issue we encountered was trying to pull up the menu via QR code. We both waited and waited and waited but nothing would come up. Then the server recommended using their wifi, but we got the same results. After several minutes (and no offer of a paper menu), one of our phones finally was able to access the menu. Sadly it is not designed for browsing on a phone, but we made do. Strike 1!! We asked for recommendations for rolls and were told that the Maui Roll is very popular. We ordered one of those along with a Makenna Roll and a Celeb Roll. And despite the fact that there was only one other couple in the restaurant, the rolls took what seemed like forever to come out. Strike 2! The Makenna Roll contained spicy tuna, avocado and cucumber, and was topped with albacore, jalapeño sauce and scallions. The Celeb Roll was very similar with the same ingredients inside and albacore on top, but also included crispy onions and a spicy sauce. Both were decent but nothing to write home about . The highly recommended Maui Roll was a disappointment. It contained panic battered onion and avocado, topped with seared cajun tuna, jalapeño sauce, scallions and sriracha. First off, the chunks of onion in the middle were so large that the pieces fell apart the moment you touched it and the cajun spices on the seared tuna was cloying and overpowering. Together with the two sauces, it was a mash up of flavors that I 'd rather not experience again.....EVER!! Strike 3!! Thankfully the service was good, though I 'm not happy with the recommended roll nor with the length of time it took to get the other rolls. Personally I will not be rushing back here, but I 'm sure their odd selection of americanized sushi mashups will appeal to someone.
Edamame was garlic edamame. It was vile. And they were out of salmon made me feel uncomfortable eating there as if it was going to be scraps of whatever fish they had left in the back. 10/10 don 't recommend eating here.
Don't be quick to judge a book by its cover, especially when it comes to Sushi Laguna. While the establishment may not win any awards for modern design, its appeal lies not in its appearance but in the quality of its offerings and the heart of its service. Sushi Laguna is our family's go to spot whenever we're in Orange County. It's the kind of place that doesn't try to woo you with unnecessary frills but impresses you with its consistent, quick, and top notch service. Every visit, we're greeted with the warmest of smiles and the most efficient service. The sushi chefs and servers are always on their A game attentive, friendly, and quick. The menu is expansive, but never overwhelming. And the sushi? Absolutely delightful. The rolls are crafted with care and precision, each one a testament to the art of sushi making. A standout favorite is the Ninja Fighter Roll it's a must try for any sushi lover. Their Udon is a comforting bowl of deliciousness that has become a firm favorite with our kids. It's the kind of dish that warms you from the inside out, and it's heartening to see a place where traditional Japanese cuisine is treated with such respect. Now, I've noticed a review from a certain Jill P. She seems to have had an unfavorable experience, mainly because her boyfriend chose to bring her here on a date. Instead of taking issue with the restaurant, I'd suggest that perhaps the real issue lies in the fact that her boyfriend didn't know her preferences well enough. Sushi Laguna may not be the trendiest sushi joint in town, but it's certainly one of the most genuine. It's a testament to the fact that great food, friendly service, and a welcoming atmosphere always stand the test of time. So, if you're in the area and you're looking for a place that delivers on all fronts, don't pass up the chance to dine at Sushi Laguna. You won't be disappointed.
Five words: go to Hapi Sushi instead. The server clearly worked for their 16% automatic gratuity and nothing further.
Came here with a local. Sat outside. Tasty rolls. Delicious seaweed salad. Super casual spot
