I had the much raved about coconut shrimp plate. The shrimp was tasteless and chewy, obviously overcooked. My husband had the mixed plate (it seemed to be what most people were ordering). The only item he liked on his plate was the beef. We both agreed the rice was way too sticky. It was a disappointing, although inexpensive, experience.
Heard that they had reasonably priced authentic Hawaiian food. I was pleasantly surprised by the entire experience. The seating was outside and practically on the sand of the beach. After a long day of playing in the sun, sitting in the shade and cool breeze instead of inside a stuffy restaurant was just what the doctor ordered! We then both had the house special, the Aloha Mixed Plate, and found the food to be tasty, well prepared, and portions that were just big enough to be nicely filling. We also found the picnic quality of the meal to be very charming. The server we had was a total sweetheart, and always found the time for a few moments of chitchat about life on the island, where was she from, places to go, etc. Never did she make us feel like a customer , more like a guest in her own home. We never had to wait for any length of time for anything we asked for or ordered, and neither did any of our fellow diners. She knew how to hustle, without losing her warm, friendly professionalism. The most pleasant shock after this very enjoyable, yet simple, dining experience was when we received the bill! 2 Mixed Plates, 1 Lemonade, 1 Iced Tea, all that wonderful atmosphere and great service, and the Total with tax was only $22.40!! You can almost spend that much at a fast food place! Needless to say we left an above standard 35% tip. If you want fancy and elegant and much higher prices, then go elsewhere. For what we were expecting....this place totally surpassed our expectations. Plan on visiting again in Oct 2008!
We went to the Aloha Mixed plate on our recent visit to Maui and boy were we disappointed. It 's in a great location, right on the beach with a great view but that is all that was great about this place. The food was HORRIBLE! Our server was cursing and swearing and our virgin drink had alcohol. You are served on paper plates and with plastic spoons and forks. I wouldn 't recommend this place at all. Spend $1 or $2 more and eat at the restaurant across the street.
