On Sunday I went to Chapel Hill and wanted to sneak a Lexington BBQ on the way. Backcountry BBQ was one of the o my places open, so I gave it a shot. My friend and I split a large plate of chopped bbq with raccoon, baked beans and hush puppies. For just over $8 it was a lot to share for lunch and a very large portion for the money. The pig was good, but not great; it lacked the smoky taste you would expect, and the sauce was traditionally flavored Lexington style vinegary and ketchup. It tasted like he was sitting in the sauce for a while. The claw was very vinegary. It was not traditional red rashes from the area, but was also not traditional mayonnaise heavy Koleslaw. It was way too vinegary for my girlfriend. The beans were great and had a nice smokey taste. The hush puppies were perfect and good crunchy outside, but still quite soft inside. The waitresses were friendly but not super attentive; we were actually a little confused if we had a certain waitress if we were to sit down where we order, etc. because nobody helped us for a while. The food was solid and the part for the price was great. It would not be my best choice for Lexington bbq, but still a solid option for cheap.
Great little bitty place to eat.. We love all the food at Backcountry, which is rare for me to say about any place. They have a limited menu with mostly barbeque items and sandwiches. They have the best char-grilled hamburger steak in our area. Our fave is the sirloin 20 oz. steak for two and is a good value. We enjoy the salad bar which comes with the steak. The bbq chicken is a treat. Service is usually very attentive.
Not Much To Look At. Yet another Lexington joint, with excellent BBQ and very little ambiance, actually it probably has the least ambiance of any BBQ joint in the state, except Snook's Old Fashion BBQ in advance, and the late Simp's BBQ in Roper. This place very well may have been a country store at one point and it is small, no more than 10 small tables. They still cook with wood coals, and the bbq is smoky, tender, moist just plain excellent. The sauce they provide is warmed, and it is hotter than any other Lexington bbg restaurant. They serve the red bbq slaw here, and it also has some spice to it that I really like. The hush puppies are just as good. They serve other things here, of course including breakfast, burgers, a pork skin sandwich, and a sirloin steak for two. But, I've only tried the BBQ, and it is enough to bring me back
Staff was friendly and attentive. Restaurant is well kept and clean. Brisket is not the in vogue Texas flare (16 mesh pepper, and Sea Salt), but it was well seasoned in the local flare, and well executed. Their chopped pork was excellent as well. It 's clear that these folks know how to BBQ right, and unlike one of their other vaunted competitors who ONLY offers pork shoulders, these folks will not only tackle a whole packer brisket, but they will heap pile it on your plate. It 's nice to have options on a menu. If you decide to go there, make certain you do not skip the Banana pudding.
