They serve breakfast all day here, specializing in pork and baked beans. For 10 CAD, every option is sure to fill you up. They don't waste any time pouring you coffee as soon as you get there and are generous with refills. I particularly loved their thick slices of toasted white bread, the pork spices spread, and the baked beans that come with every breakfast option. Service was friendly and fast.
La Binerie was a new experience for me I knew almost nothing about traditional Quebecois food. The dishes themselves are very simple the food of simple people without a lot of money and likely not a lot of time to cook. I grew up in upstate New York, and many of the dishes they serve (except the desserts remind me of the simple country food I grew up on. But that 's the only comparison I can make. The execution of these dishes are what makes them stand out. I ordered the Boudin Noir (blood sausage with grilled apple slices. It sounded good, and I 've had Boudin Noir before, but this was definitely the best I 've ever had. (The proprietor told me that Boudin Noir was the only dish they do not make by scratch at the restaurant. It takes a master hand, and this dish delivered. The portion was generous but not too much. (Overall portion sizes are generous without being ridiculous. By the way, the Boudin Noir came with two sides: some mashed potatoes, and some steamed carrots. It was plain no special sauces or extra gussying but perfectly cooked. Teenage son had grilled beef liver also delicious. My rusty French allowed me to understand nearly everything on the menu but the staff is also very nice about explaining dishes. La Binerie Mont Royal is not a curiosity the room was mostly filled by locals coming for a good, hearty meal. We tried two dessert dishes including the Choemeur a very sweet little piece of cake. This was also new to me, and I looked it up. Their version is sweet, to be sure, but it has lovely little crusty edges that make this a beautiful end to a meal. I ordered a meal instead of a la carte, and I requested the blanc mange for my dessert. Also lovely, and sized appropriately. Would love to return. The people are very nice and accommodating, when you don 't quite know what you want. And more important, event though it is a small lunch counter restaurant, they make you feel right at home.
I am so glad I found this wonderful cafe! It made my trip to Montreal complete. We had the traditional Quebecois plate... wonderful! I loved the pudding chomeur. The owner was very kind and we were all very happy to have sampled such delicious traditional cuisine. Highly recommend!
I am ALWAYS in my Happy Place when I visit La Binerie. I visit Montreal from the States a couple of times a year and even if it's only for a weekend, I make sure that I hit La Binerie at least twice during my visit, once definitely for breakfast. I STILL love EVERYTHING on the menu but the 3 things I ALWAYS have to get during a weekend are the Black Pudding, the Pudding Chomeur and the BEANS! The Beans, the Beans, the Beans! I eat their beans with every meal there. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Every time that I visit La Binerie I feel like I am dropping by to catch up with my French cousins and enjoy some good home cooking.
THERE IS NOTHING BETTER THAN LA BINERIE! I still dream about the breakfast I had here. Every item on the menu is the best version of that bfast item you could ever find anywhere. Maybe the food tasted better because of the unassuming environment, but so what! The old fashioned diner makes it feel like you've gone back in time, and the owner/chef (a one person operation when I was there!!! shows an old video of the diner during its first years, with the same chef/owner. Creating this feeling of nostalgia, the food feels even more special now that you know the same chef was making all the same classic dishes for his guests decades ago. We came for the baked beans as they are a staple of Montreal and was so pleased with the ones here. I hadn't had better. The toast was also a stand out, buttered and charred to perfection, I would do anything to replicate it. The bacon was fantastic as was the spinach omelette. We also ordered a slice of shephard's pie because he makes them fresh daily, and that was also great! Could've skipped it considered we'd ordered so much, but happy we didn't.
