Not only was it the only Boddega that still holds traditional production techniques, but the tour also felt much more personal than the one I had done before. José was a fantastic and very friendly guide. His deep knowledge of and true passion for his products was clearly visible. If you are looking for a fantastic tasting tour of an authentic Bodega in La Rioja, I recommend visiting Bodegas Valentin Pascual!
An amazing journey back 100 years in the original way in which local wine was made. Exactly enough, their wine is still produced in the same way and uses much of the same equipment and processing equipment from these years. They are the last winery in Spain, which still presses grapes from their own lands with their feet, in their cave from the XV century. Jose, the winemaker and son of the owner Valentín Pascual, was our host for the tour and tasting. We coordinated the visit by e-mail and he was ready to open on Sunday for our visit. Our visit began with Jose opening a stone door in the ground to dwell a glass in one of the centuries-old oats of between 7,000 and 10,000 liters capacity vans, which are based on the street level. Remarkable, it was the youngest vintage and it was a huge fruit forward, coal maceration wine. This winery produces under the streets around the main square in the city. A living museum of completely crafted wine production. Jose's grandfather, Don José María Pascual, the third generation of the family, installed a filling machine that is still used. They produce a red wine, Valentín Pascual. Tempranillo and Grenache grapes from their own vineyards with an average of 50 years. Cherry red color with purple colors. Nose shows aromas of black fruits and flowers, with light notes of citrus. In the mouth it is delicious and smooth and well balanced, with a good body and a long finish. 5 months in oats before filling. Most of their production is produced in Vermouth in a local processing plant where the alcohol content is much higher. This was the most interesting tour through a winery during our 3 week, 25 winery tour around La Rioja. Only 20 minutes outside Logroño, La Rioja, it is a MUST SEE for every visitor.
