I really want people to know that this place is under new management and it is wonderful! the new owners are a breath of fresh air. the food is delicious and homemade with generous portions and cheap trips.
After a long day of driving, we were in search of a quick meal and table service without any frills. The Nipigon Esso had both fast food counters and a family restaurant, so we decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, our experience was far from pleasant. The food was decent, but the waitress was the worst we had ever encountered. It felt like she viewed us and the other customers as an inconvenience. She argued with my order, got it wrong, and seemed annoyed when she had to correct it. She did not offer coffee refills, did not ask about dessert, and overall, made our visit uncomfortable. It seemed like she was being forced to work there, and we couldn't understand why the management would allow such behavior. We observed her treating other customers similarly. As we were nearing the end of our cross-Canada trip, we had visited many family restaurants, and this one fell short. Nipigon Esso Restaurant, please consider improving by replacing this waitress and providing better training and supervision for your staff.
We tried the aloo paratha and rice plate with daal and salted leti at this restaurant and everything was incredibly tasty. My husband enjoyed the leti so much that we decided to return later in the day to get another one when we were back in Thunder Bay.
Since the new owners took over, this restaurant has become a fantastic place to dine. I love visiting here as it feels like a second home. The owners are incredibly welcoming and the menu offers a mix of Canadian and Indian cuisine. The food is delicious, with standout dishes like the Gyro on the dinner special and the clubhouse sandwich. Personally, I can't resist the amazing Indian dishes, such as shahi paneer, butter chicken, samosas, yogurt, roti, and chickpea curry. Everything is made from scratch and bursting with flavor. Don't forget to try the chai tea as well! It's a refreshing change from the typical truck stop fare. Be sure to ask your server for the Indian menu to truly experience the flavorful offerings.
